Hello! First post here, so bear with me if I sound dumb :D

A month ago, I purchased my first tube amp, a late-60's Silverface Drip-Edge Bassman Head, and it sounds fantastic. The clean sounds are just fantastic and the Bassman doesn't make my ears bleed when I play my telecaster. Also, I recently got a 60's Bassman cab and threw a couple Eminence speakers in there and it sounds great!

The only problem I have is that the head likes to do a lot of crackling and popping (no snapping, thank God  ). It does still have an old two-prong plug, so I kind of assumed that was the problem, but I could be wrong. I'm taking it into a local shop tomorrow to get it swapped for a three-prong plug so I don't accidentally electrocute myself at an inopportune moment onstage. I'd prefer not to crack into/mod the interior myself, as I would hate to ruin a great, old amp with my technical inexperience.

Can anybody think of any other possible reason why it could be crackling and popping? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

-TL

If it hasn't been re-capped, it is way past time. Have the amp tech give it a thorough check up.

+1 Those Caps filter out the crackles and pops, hence the name "Filter Caps".

And welcome to the forum and vintage amp ownership. It is both a priveledge to own a vintage amp and a responsibility to keep it in top form. When you get that puppy back from the tech, enjoy like you stole it!

+1 to all comments thus far. I'd add that the bias cap -- if original -- should be replaced as well, along with all of the power-rail resistors under the doghouse.

BTW, nothing we've recommended thus far is considered a "mod". They're merely sound maintenance protocols to keep an aging road warrior healthy going into the new millenium.

Best of luck, HTH
