Recently re-tubed a '77 VC, everything else in the amp is in great shape, well except the speaker. With volume cranked above 8, especially when using a hum-bucker equipped guitar, the speaker can fart sometimes. Many single coil guitars are fine cranked, and using input 2 reduces farting with a hum-bucker. Otherwise the sound is wonderful, especially when using tremolo, sweet! The RCA rectifier is as strong as ever, left that one in there.

The owner thinks that he wants a "Kendrick" (sp?) speaker, but he doesn't know why, never heard one, but it seems that it is the only speaker name that he knows.

I didn't want to just throw in any new speaker, I would probably just use a Weber, but wanted some opinions from those that might have changed the speaker in a VC. I told the owner that I would get some other opinions for an excellent replacement. Maybe a killer speaker recommendation, and a budget recommendation that might be close to killer. Any problems with fitting various speakers?

This is the stock speaker (Brand?). And, yes, I cleaned it up first.

Shimmy, Not sure if the owner wants to spring for this speaker. But, I can tell you I've put, at least 6 into VC and Champs... and they cook! Really, the best 8-inchers I've used.

Shimmy...Those Webers are fine at $75, but I used a Kendrick Black Frame in my '68 Champ and I love it...Good definition when played clean - rich and "brown" when driven hard is what their web page says and it is the truth...$90 ain't cheap, but these are Great speakers. Can't go wrong with either choice.

+1 on the Kendrick......they're punchy and a skosh more efficient than the Weber. Be sure to order the 4-ohm version of whatever speaker your client decides on.

Seems like a couple of great choices. If I understand, the Kendrick would be closer in sound to the original (nice), with early speaker distortion when pushed, but smoother and better than the original. The Weber seems as if it would be clean and punchy, little or no speaker breakup, which would better suit my taste. The owner really likes the sound as-is, but the farting is the only problem. I played it on 10 using a PRS with single coils, strumming hard, input 2, and it was awesome, no farting.

BTW, what is the original, Utah, Oxford?

Most Vibrochamps were factory-equipped with an alnico Oxford. However the speaker in that particular amp looks to be a Rola or a Pyle. Are there any numbers visible on it?

After vacuuming, I looked closely and found no numbers on the speaker anywhere. I even removed the grill and looked at the front, nothing but dust. The only part that I didn't see was the part of the magnet that faces the bottom of the cab. I will look again when I get it back to change the speaker.

I guess i better "walk the walk" if going "talk the talk." Best 8-inch speaker I've ever used. Never tried the Kendricks. But, they are also high quality stuff.

I kinda like Weber. Gotta keep hand-made US stuff going. Just too much off-shore crap, these days.

If Truman hadn't been such a globalist, new-world-order liberal pansy, MacArthur could have prevented the majority of the problem of the cheap foreign crap that we suffer with now. Funny though that you posted a pic of your amp with a Canadian output tube installed.

Shimmy, Ironic, no? Those GE Canadian made GTY are very good tubes. Like Briitsh Brimars and Mullards. And French Visseuax, Mazda, & RFT's.

But, I'd would hate to see Weber go outta business. Really, the last of the hand-built US made anything.

Definitely, I like to support US-made products, and no problem with Canadian or Mexican, as they are really largely US companies anyway. I thought that Kendrick was also all US-made, in Texas. :?: I generally prefer Eminence and Weber for replacement speakers. Being from KY myself, kinda biased towards Eminence. You're right, the problem is, there are fewer and fewer US-made products to choose from every day. Fч©king globalist @$$holes!
