Hey y'all! I'm writing to say thanks first. Awhile back I wrote in complaining about my 66 BF Super's overall tone. Everyone here told me to get the cap job done, plus to get rid of the SS rectifier it had. So I braved the scary amp tech here and got it done. I am really happy with the results too, thanks to all of you here. He did "cathode by pass caps" and JJ's and just kind of cleaned stuff up. His contention was that filter caps didn't need changed unless they hum or blow fuses so those are still original. But, the amp does sound a lot better and I actually like playing through it again! You can hear it if you like on my youtube channel (link below.) I recorded Natural Born Lover with it- first one on there. The other tunes I'm playing through a blues deville. Anyway, thanks again so much!
Mark

I don't follow this philosophy. I think it's better to replace all electrolytic caps, at the same time. Then, you know exactly when they were replaced. Doing it piece-meal is like replacing one tire at a time on your car. Then, you spend all your time replacing caps, IMHO.

My contention is, when one of those tired electrolytics gives up the ghost, it's liable to take the power tranny with it. And I've seen precisely that kind of expensive damage on many occasions. All because somebody cheaped out when the amp was ready for periodic servicing. Better to be "penny-wise" than "pound-foolish".

JMOOC......

Arjay, Yeah I get your point. But you prolly agree that replacing, say, the first stage filter caps can place strain on the other OEM caps? Including bypass and sometimes the bias supply cap(s). I usually will do all, if I'm going to do one set in the PS stage.

It's just me (actually, this is what I was taught by an old amp tech years ago--- guess he left an everlasting impression).

Agreed. Which is why it's imperative to do a complete overhaul when it's time to service the power supply, including the power-rail resistors (often overlooked by many during this process).

Yep, concur!!!! The power filter caps and bias cap are due. On the other-hand the Mallorys are great. But the amp has one foot on a banana peel. Personally, I wouldn't jeopardize the transformers. Sure, you could loose tubes and components if a failure happens. But OEM transformers deserve protection. JMHO Art
