Does ANYBODY gig with their vintage amps?
Too scared the amp might get damaged or stolen?
Vintage amps are ALL I gig with...that's what they're made for...I pity the fool who ever tries to steal one! This is my current main rig...'67 Vibrolux Reverb and '62 Strat AVRI. Image

Rebel Soul. Very nice looking setup.
I have never owned an amp who's official Fender name started with a "V".

Your's is a 1967 Blackface Fender Vibrolux Reverb 2x10.
How does it compare with 1960s Deluxe Reverbs as far as chassis designs
Also, I have a 1964 Fender Super Reverb 4x10
and a 1968 Fender Bandmaster Reverb amp head.
Question: Are any of the above four amp's circuit designs related?

Similar: Fender has some designs in groups/families of amps, such as:
Twin Reverb, Vibrosonic Reverb, Quad Reverb, Showman Reverb, etc.
What do you or any forum member know about these families?

I recently sold my 1962 1x12 6G4A Super Amp and am seeking a small combo amp
from the 1960s with reverb. Most of my 1960s amps are amp heads with cabinets.
Thanks for your response. Toppscore :)

Just to muddy the subject(and bug Shimmy) I used a Champ 12 for 5-6 years. It was in no way as down-home as my '55 Valco(never owned a vintage Champ). The amp has 500 VDC on the 6L6 plate, (2) 12AX7's, and a solid state short spring reverb, a 12" Emminence Fender design speaker. Used it to drive a 4X10 Musicman. The best feature, IMHO, was the line out. And yes, replaced the input jack before I sold it. The amp went to Madison, WI. The fella uses three of them in a country, polka, cajun band. That's three single-ended amps for his guitar!!! How cool is that? Art

Pardon my ignorance Art but what does single ended mean?

Arc, not good at amp definitions. But in this case, it refers to a single power tube supplying the amplification. So you're in Class A. Now, you can have a single ended amp with multiple power tubes and operate in a Class A configuration. Witness Matchless, Trainwreck, Dr Z, and Badcat to name a few. I'm sure the other guys can clarify this point, better than myself. Art

Sorry to butt in, again... single-ended is the simplest amp output stage topology. Utilizing a single output tube and an OPT to drive the speakers. Basically, the output tube is 'ON' all the time, producing the upper and lower portions of the sine wave. Phasing with the OPT to do this. So, it must be in Class "A."

What makes SE amp so unqiue, is how they allow the output tube to really shine (or fail). A good output tube will be allowed to drive into OD on its own character. And shouldn't be driven into OD by early gain stage OD. This makes for the Bluesy, brown tone so loved by many guitarists.

A good SE amp is very responsive to articulation and finger control. And not so dependent on pedals or other EFX devices.

Topp,
The Vibrolux Reverb 35 watt,Deluxe Reverb 22 watt,Pro Reverb 40 watt, are the Blackface models that I own and have used the most...they are very similar sounding except for the speaker configuration and of course the Deluxe uses 6V6's while the others have 6L6's,there's not much of a difference in the circuits,AB763 Deluxe and AA165 Pro,and AA964 Vibrolux...the reverb is the same, they all use a 5AR4/GZ34 rectifier and the preamp tubes are 12AX7 and 12AT7 also....of course the Pro and Vibrolux have more headroom than the Deluxe.
The main thing a guitarist who uses them in a band situation will find is that the DR will break up earlier, but will still cut through the mix if the drummer is a good one,and the VR will be similar to the PR with the main sonic difference being the 2x10 vs. the 2x12 speakers...the weight of the amps varies with the DR being the lightest, followed by the VR then PR.
They all sound great with Strats, some guys who play Teles love the VR,...the late Roy Buchanan was a great Tele/VR virtuoso, the PR is great with guitars that use single coil pickups, and a Les Paul or similar guitar with humbuckers will sound fantastic through the 2x10 VR.
After many years using mainly DR's onstage, because of the portability and sound...I've been loving my VR,and I really could get by with just those two....but it's fun to have the others also.....the Blackface amps are perfect to me,I couldn't ask for more...even though I own and use some Brownface amps.

Gotta dig on the creativity. Bet it sounded great. I've not
tried in years to hook up stereo setups. No reason not to.

Thanks, Rebel. Two things.
1) Do you really believe certain amps and certain guitars really cannot work together
to sound good? There are so many options with switches, volume & tone controls.
I can understand "popular" because Roy Earl Albert BB Eric George Jeff Jimi Jimmy Alvin
used certain combinations that sound great. But, honestly, I believe someone can make
any Tele/Strat & Fender Amp sound great. Don't you?

============
2) Is there a list of Fender "circuit families"?
I would love to know the Fender Bassman's lineage.

I have read where the following families can swap their chassis with minimal or no mods:
a) Twin Reverb - Showman Reverb - Quad Reverb - Vibrosonic Reverb (two others?)
b) Bandmaster Reverb - Super Reverb - Vibrolux Reverb - (some others)
c) Fender 75 - Fender 140
Now, I could be way-off-base-wrong, but I'm discussing "circuit design familes"
where the wattage or ohms may vary, but not much else within the same Fender
chassis circuits "all made the same year or near years" ~ like the Twin Reverb family.

Not the kind of lineage such as the Bassman's 5B6-5D6-5E6-5F6-G6G etc
or that the Bassman led to the Mesa Boogie or the Marshall JTM, etc.

Someday, I will procure
the best rated eight inch Champ,
the best rated ten inch Champ, and
the best rated twelve inch Champ.

Then, I will do ABC comparisons. We shall see. Proof is in the amp
