Does ANYBODY gig with their vintage amps?
Too scared the amp might get damaged or stolen?

Wow! is that 1946 cabinet original? Your pictures put the "V" in vintage
Looks way too totally cool. Thanks for the share.

Would you say they are "PTP Point-to-Point" hand-wired?
Both 1946 & 1948 = PTP???

Geeeezzzzzzzz, I did not know amps existed back in 1948.
Who played them professionaly?
Were there amps with larger speakers than eight or ten inches?

Thanks again, BMW. Toppscore 8)

Phans thanks, for the compliment! :)

That amp has a 6SJ7-type input tube. Really, a better tube (to me) than the duo-triode 12AX7. Very slow, early onset of OD. But, not the crazy distortion at "12" you get with some 12AX7 setups (which require you to go to 12AY7's or some such tube).

I use the mil spec red RCA 5693. Sweetest metal front end tube around. IMHO.

You know, the Model 26 is sitting in it shipping crate, still. I've only redid the power caps, put in new NOS tubes & played it maybe two dozen times. The speaker and wooden cab are just too precious to risk damage. Sad, no?

I haven't seen a good one on EBay or CL in years.

Edit: Topp,
It's a ten inch Jensen or Cleveland, I believe. Made before the stamped "220" or "433" codes. Think it's one of the first post-war fixed magnet alnico speakers used in guitar amps.

1930's made Gibson and Epiphones are the cat's meow. You can still find WW2 and post era Epiphone Zephyrs. Not a bad project to work on.

A guy posted his DIY Model 26 head unit. He later went to custom Magnequest irons. One of the best in the business.

These old amps have some of the best tones. Due to great iron and tubes. Well broken in, after years of abuse.

Phansford. Nice looking axes and sound boxes.
I really do like the projector box and suitcase.
Real cool vintage look.

What is it about the Champs that you like?
Did Champs ever come in eight inch speakers,
or always ten inch speakers? Toppscore 8)

***By the way, I have purchased a couple of Bell & Howell
speaker cabinets with Jensen P12P speakers in them. Cool stuff.

Like Beemer says most Champs came with 8" speakers. The early tweed champs started with 6" drivers. Like Beemer's Champion 600. They started having 8" drivers with the later 5F1 Champs. The BF and SF Champs/Vibro Champs had 8" speakers.

You might enjoy the Fender Field Guide, which is now run by Ampwares. Its a pretty complete listing of vintage Fender amps and lists the tech specs for each amp.

I like smaller watt amps. I don't gig and don't need to have anything too big. The Champs and Princetons are great for home use. I get everything I need out of those amps.

Oooooooops
Sorry, Never had one and have not studied them.
Thought the Champ market was practice amps and college amps.

Although I did read where Eric Clapton did an entire album using a Champ.
I did read there is at least one model of Champs with a ten inch speaker.
Maybe in the 1980s or the Champ II or something.

1982-1983 The Champ II = 1x10"
1982-1985 The Super Champ = 1x10"
1987-1992 The Champ 12 = 1x12"

So, for about eleven years, Champs had ten inch and twelve inch speakers.

I was bidding on my first Champ with Red Knobs, earlier this year
because it had spring reverb and a headphone jack, if I recall correctly.

There may be other Champs with bigger speakers than eight inches.

I will double check. Toppscore 8)

The Super and Champ II are Rivera-era amps. The Champ 12 has some issues - I think it had a plastic input jack that was easily damaged.

The smaller amps are not just "student" amps - Champs and Princetons were/are used for recording. It wasn't only Clapton on Layla. Think about it.... how bad do you want to be in a small padded room with a 100 watt head and a stack. It is pretty well documented that Jimmy Page was using small Supro/Valco amps on those early Zeppelin albums and Richards has talked about using tweed Champs on many of the Stones albums.
