Can up on the top of the chassis has another advantage. It is tightly sealed and prolly won't leak gooky-funky mess onto the circuit... like separate 'lytics might. I've only seen Mallory and Sprague cans leak their guts under catastrophic failure. Like shorts in the rectifier, power section, PS rail, or trannies.

for the cheap route and to get it back in fighting shape I just replaced the 80uf that someone had installed and put in another 20uf 500V and siliconed it in place.

Very simple to change back to original with a can later.

Now it sounds and reacts like a Vibro Champ ! The tremolo on it is sweet too !

Blues,

That'll do fine. One trick is to goober the cap with some silicon sealer. This keeps the heavy cap from vibrating too much and resulting in either either early failure or microphonics.

Wonder why the heck the tech that did that replacement chose a 80mfd cap? Definitely not recommended as the first cap off a 5Y3GT rectifier.

Darn good question !
The job was clean and excellent solder work so.......
all the tubes were jj replacements and sovtek, i'm guessing it was our local Expert, same guy who passed by the bulging cap in that 67 bassman that took me forever to rid it of buzzes.

I will no doubt toss the whole repair and put in a proper can cap to keep her legit ! at some point.

I have an RCA to 1/4" adaptor and plan to run it through my 4 ohm cab later today, that poor little weber gets to overdrive way too soon.

Blues,

My advice is to get that 30/20/20/20 at 525VDC can while they are available. Really they are made for Dynaco amp rebuilders (a dying breed--- literally).

You can store it in a cool place and ramp it up slowly to re-form the puppy. The 525VDC rating is superior to the 475VDC rated one. IMHO and experience.

I'm assuming that leaving that last 20 open won't hurt anything ? and use the 30 for the first stage ???

It does sound great now BTW

Nope, no issues. See the layout for wiring to can.

BTW... this is a great can for PR's, too.

Really, the VC is a Godsend. As versatile as any small amp ever made. IMHO, of course.

Looks easy enough !
Bottom or far right as it is on the diagram is the first stage ? where the 30uf would go.
and the whole thing is grounded via the tabs, right ?

I'll get one ordered up soon !

Its hard to decide weather to keep the VC or the VHT, That little hand wired VHT sounds pretty cool !!! and weighs in at about noth'n
And I'm really digg'n my new earcandy cabs too !!!

Yup. Semi-circle = first stage. Square = second. Triangle = third. Blank = 4th. Or 30/20/20/20 for this 525VDC can. The AB764 schemo/layout shows it better. Which uses a 40/20/20-- like the Bronco.

Outside tab(s) are soldered to chassis, as ground.

http://www.webphix.com/schematic%20heav ... _ab764.pdf

Notice how I paralleled the two (square and semi-circle) 20mfd section = 40 mfd for this Bronco layout? The triangle then = second section & the "blank" then = third section. The can is a 20/20/20/20 at 525VDC Mallory. You can get creative if you wish. But you don't need to with the 30/20/20/20 can and your VC.

Here's "after" shot with completed three-prong AC wiring. With black lead going to fuse. White to switch.

All new bypass caps and a couple new coupling caps (to replace leaky ones). Also, Riken resistor in 6V6GT cathode-to-ground.

FWIW... playing with those couling caps in the input stage can really bring out the sparkle in this amp. Since, it is such a simple KISS design... the input is 40-50% of the tone (IMHO). Dynami-caps are crazy good here. But, my bet is that Russian mil spec PIO (like K40Y-9) would be equally as good.

Good luck with your amp. It's a great one.
