Doubt it was that loud. Dead system was unique in that it was a PA for each player behind them, reproducing exactly the frequencies needed. Mics had an interesting phase cancellation technique to prevent feedback.

Probably more around 100db @ 50ft. Still very loud mind you.

140db is a Jet engine at 50'; 180db is a rocket launching pad. 200 is probably blindness.

The Weber California ceramic 12's with the aluminum dust caps aren't a JBL, but Ted did tell me when I ordered my set that they are as close as you can get today. Clean and bright. I have a set in my 2x12 Bandmaster below.

I bought a set of Warehouse Speakers G12C's for my Showman 2x12 closed cab; they sound a little sweeter so one of these days I will put the Webers up for sale.

I believe the loudest measured was Pink Floyd at Astrodome (something around 120dB at 50 meters). One thing about that Dead array... I bet it projected out to about 10 miles. :D

The Who played the Hollywood Bowl back in '76 and by most accounts, it was audible all the way down in Long Beach.

"His bass sounded like a bleedin' VC10!"

Arjay, I kinda remember an article about Steve Miller practicing on his SUNN amp on his ranch in No Cal. And ppl enjoying it, in a town 15 miles away.

Hey! How does your Twin Reverb project? Mine with those K-120's can cause damage a LONG WAYS away. Imagine two 4 by 12-inchers with those speakers?

When I wire it up with a Dual Showman cab they can hear me two or three counties over.

A pair of D120F's and a pair of D130F's driven by 135 watt of pure tube bliss = a sonic weapon.

Arjay,

Check out the K-series data. 120 and 130 well over 100dB, 1 watt at 1 meter.

http://www.lansingheritage.org/images/j ... /page4.jpg

You have any archived data on the D-series?

Thanks!

I have all the factory literature that came in the cartons with D-series speakers from several different eras, including the "hang tags" with the hot-air balloon that had "JBL ABOVE ALL OTHERS" written on the side of it, mounting data, standard operating specification sheets, some "virgin" warranty cards I never bothered to mail in, even a bill-of-sale for a pair of D130F's I bought at The Vox Room in Sacramento back in 1975. I have some K-series memorabilia as well.

(yeah......I'm a pack-rat)

That would be +121 dB SPL at 1 meter with 135 watts input!

As to the loudness, it has a price; Pete Townshend now has constant tinnitus, which if you have it , it sucks.

Art - not really a deadhead, but a fan of early sound reinforcement and the Dead was up there with the Who in carrying their own system to satisfy their demand to be heard. Far cry from a few speakers for a Beatles concert...

Waves are breaking very nicely; may have to go boogieboarding Sunday. Top's been down on the car all month.
