I bought a 1976 Twin Reverb that has been used and seen some abuse. My friend and tech, took out a quart size zip-lock bag of monkey $@!& mods that had been performed on this amp and reconed the JBLs. He also installed audio taper pots for the volume knobs. It will get plety loud, but I also have a Twin Reverb I can play in the house without tearing down the walls. The amp has a great sound and lots of mojo; even down to the Cadillac emblem which I have left on it at least for now.

+1

The Weber California's would be an excellent all-around choice. Just don't expect them to sound like a JBL, because they don't.

" only seem to change vol a little now nothing again. wierd?? "

Not wierd at all. All gain stage and EFX stages in these Fender amp are interactive. Even with the EFX turned off. So say, the bypass caps on the 12AT7 and 12AX7 (7025) are weak. This would set the idle down and effect the bass response. And have an overall effect on the performance of the amp (reverb turned on or not).

It's why VC's have a little more gain than plain Champs. That extra 12AX7 does effect the overall tone and performance. Vibrato on or not.

Purchasing any piece of vintage gear implies a certain degree of liability as far as its operational condition. I always budget $200 to $300 for servicing upon acquisition to bring the amp up to full factory specs whenever I buy one. I've been fortunate that few of my Fender's have required that much maintainence but I keep that money at the ready lest someone sell me a basket case wrapped in velvet.

Hopefully your bench fees and repair costs will be minimal.

I invested more on the repair of my TR than the purchase price. I now have a good solid amp for my money and effort though and am most pleased with it.

+1, Rob.

And you'll likely get decades worth of reliable service from it before further overhaul is required.

Yep! Pay the piper. I own quite a few amps. Most of them arrived in great shape.

Last month, I took a 1963 Fender Tremolux into the shop for noises & sounds.
The amp pro whom I have used the most, lately, just charged me bench time
as (he claims) all is good for an older amp. Mostly, the problem was that
some capacitors/resistors had fallen/faded from spec. I said to replace them.
But, they said it would cost more to fix/repair the issues than the benefit gained
of a slight decrease of amp noise. Get any and all amps checked out immediately.

Last month, I brought in a 1965 Fender Deluxe Reverb. The seller, knowledgeable or not,
claimed five "minor" issues in the EBay add. Upon arrival, the claimed issues were
devastating and not repairable. I filed EBay Buyer Protection claiming not as described.
EBay stepped in and ordered the amp be taken to my repair shop for a full analysis, but
no work to be performed. Well, they opened up the Deluxe and found many more items
not described in the EBay listing. I had EBay call the shop and I sent the repairs invoice
to EBay. I won the case. Seller fought all the way. It cost me $65 for the bench
inspection and $45 to ship it back. I lost that $110. But, I was not stuck with an amp
that would have cost $600 to make it correct, and the correct parts would make the
amp mostly UN-original. This is the worst case I have been involved in. I won, but
because EBay had a Buyer Protection Policy, I was backed up by EBay & Paypal.
Get any and all amps checked out immediately.

This week, I just received my Fender 1984 Twin Reverb II 105w Amp Head back from
the repair shop. It arrived dead. Not working and not lighting up. I had the seller pay
for the repairs. Turns out a lead wire and two power tubes were broken during shipping.
Now, I gotta say, this is one of the best sounding amps I have, and I have many from
1954-1968. The reverb is incredible. Get any and all amps checked out immediately.

Tomorrow, I pull out of the shop the first amp I purchased as an adult. I just purchased
it last year, so if you think I know nothing about Fender and Fender amps now,
last year I really knew absolutely nothing at all
It's a 1968 Fender Dual Showman Reverb TFL5000D. This was purchase last year.
I did not know or understand Silverface, Drip Edge trim, proper grill cloth, 3-prong plugs
installed correctly, and it had a bit of motorboarding. Well, I learned my lesson.
Structurally, the amp is outstanding. All components are original. Sounds incredible.
It is just the silly drip-edge trim and the grill that is installed sideways.
Outside of that, it’s a great amp. Get any and all amps checked out immediately.

Like others say, get it right by a pro, and they will last for years.

Take care. Hope my recent repair adventures have helped. Toppscore 8)

Celestions will never get you to Garcia.

Go with the Weber Cali's.

+1000.

Cali's are the closest thing to JBL's, IME. Of course, D130's & 120's are the ultimate---as you can kinda tell from photo...
