So i have been wanting a fender twin reverb bad, OK I am a bedroom player and only playing guitar 2 years (yes i know a twin is overkill, not asking for anyone to reiterate that lol) but i like projects, and learning new things, i want a amp to love for the rest of my life, im ok with a soldering gun and under stand electronics.. i work on copiers/printers for a living and wanted not to spend to much, but delve into a amp...

so that said....... i dont know if this was a good deal, but today i bought one
so this is where i need you alls help and opinions, much appreciated..

i met a guy on craigslist had a silver face for 750,, he put on craigslist as:

"Recent 350.00 spent on refurbishing upgrade new tubes , speakers every thing has been examined by professionals, excellent condition 750.00 firm price valued at 1250.-1300.00 comes with origional footswitch"

so i met him agreeing to pay 700 if it was as he said, i met him and he had no foot pedal, i could not test reverb or trem because of that, i had another 65 re. picked out at guitar center for 699 and eventuality talked this guy down to $550

so here i am
s# is A89XXXX according to http://www.superchamp.dk/dating_fenders.htm
it is a 75' has master vol push pull vol, also has what this guy called a common mod to
put vibro and reverb on normal channel as well as vibrato channel.
does not have org speakers, has "peavey scorpions" in it.
i butchered a rca cable to see in i could test the vibro and reverb,
vibro worked with crossed cable, but i can not get reverb working, i have a foot pedal on order but this scares me..

so what do you all think of this amp??
think i waisted my money?
is it a good year, is the year corect?
are these "peavey scorpions" junk?
what do you think of his "common mod"??
the amp dont sound bad but not as nice as a new 65 reis i have tested in guitar center..
do you think the reverb is broken??
any thoughts? Thankyou all in advance :)

lots of pics here http://www.flickr.com/photos/23193505@N06/7373493816/

One thing certain......the reverb is "broken".

A footswitch is not necessary to switch this effect on. It's always activated and requires the footswitch only to turn it off.

Depending on where you live, you could do a whole lot worse than to have Arjay repair your amp.

You're asking for a complete evaluation, a prescription for treatment, and an estimate of cost(s) via "forum diagnosis" without the attending physician ever seeing the patient.

With all "due respect", that's totally unrealistic. There's no telling what I (or any other competent tech) might find once the chassis hit the bench. I've owned a half a dozen Twin Reverbs over the last forty-five years (currently have two in my herd) and have worked on dozens of them. In very few cases was there ever a common malady that these amps suffered from. Frankly, they're a pretty durable and reliable platform so long as would-be "modders" kept their dick-beaters off of the amp and wannabee technicians had a solid grasp of tube amp architecture and some decent test equipment.

De, from my place of observation, you're just gettin'n started with this amp. If you really like it, the rest is just a matter of repair(if necessary) and normal maintenance. Can't see much of a struggle to get this amp up to speed. There's plenty of help around here. Art

Outstanding! Twenty bucks is a small price to pay to restore the reverb.

You paid $550 for the amp?

I don't think you were robbed. The amp seems to be in decent shape, electronically and cosmetically. The average price for these is around $575 to $650. As for the mod, if it's done correctly and there are no operational problems I'd live it in place. It's a change of convenience and many find it useful.

Rawk on!

I just spent $178 for repairs one one amp.
It included a new reverb tank on a 1965 Fender Deluxe Reverb
They installed a new correct Accutronics and new reverb cables
for $50 parts (my price) and added 1.5 hours of shop time.

So, not the end of the world.

I just brought my 1984 Twin Reverb II from the amp repair shop.
It arrived dead (no noise) from shipping from Tennessee.

The TR-II had four New JJ's power tubes installed & professionally biased.
After fully testing the amp, they discovered a broken lead wire (from shipping)
with a broken solder joint during shipping and two broke power tubes.
The shop fully tested all components, caps, tubes, resisters, wires & pots.

All for $80 for the JJs power tubes and 1.5 hours of tech bench time.
This amp arrived dead. The seller had never used the
reverb section or the second channel. He is the lead guitarist
for Trace Adkins and tours constantly with Trace. I got him to
send me $150 for amp repairs. The amp shop went over everything,
and the reverb turns out to be one of the best I have heard. Yeah!!

All amps will need repairs. Whether you do it yourself (good luck owning
all the right tools and know what to do) or have an amp shop do it,
things happen.

If your 1975 Twin Reverb has great tolex, faceplate, wood cabinet,
original knobs, original transformers, original speakers, and all good
with everything "that is not in the chassis": no rust or corrosion, then you
got a good deal for $550/ish. It is easy to get chassis components repaired,
tested, replaced, etc.

But it is hard to replace wood rot, water damage, scratched faceplates,
rust & corrosion, etc.

Hope sharing the pricing of my repairs helps you. Not too bad, and
they will last me for a long time. I now can count on both amps. Toppscore.
