Whose to say what anyone really needs?

Champ - small single ended amp
Princeton Reverb - slightly larger push-pull amp

Of course you need both, plus some 6L6 flavor, and perhaps some brown face, tweed, etc...

I guess my question was really is there anything the SF champ can do that a Princeton Reverb can't?

IMHO... the Champ and VC with its single-end, single 6V6GT, Class "A" topology has this really beautiful, curvy, brown overdrive that the BF/SF Fender push-pull, AB1 amp don't have. You put good tubes in a Champ and you are rewarded, as the simpler circuitry lets them shine.

Up to mid volume, not that much difference between the two. But, pushed to saturation... the Champ has great harmonics and overtones. Something, you sometimes don't get in the PR, which keeps the two 6V6GT cleaner to a louder volume--- plus, the heavier iron is less susceptible to saturation. But, both characteristics makes the PR louder.

Just my 2¢ worth...

Pretty much just the earlier breakup then?

Cremier breakup. Earlier, but not crunchy. Slower onset. Very controllable with settings on guitar. Really displays the best of a good 6V6GT. I have both BF PR and a BF VC. I like both. I play on the VC more.

:D

What trem pedal would you recommend for a regular SF champ?

I re-built a Matchless Vibro-box. They are nearly impossible to find these days. I use it on all non-vibrato/tremolo amps.

But, you know one of the BEST tremolo/vibrato tone is sitting in a VC. Really, hard to beat.

It's also worth soldering up or purchasing an RCA-1/4" speaker cable so that you can run your champ into other 8 ohm speaker cabs - makes it even more versatile.

May have to start looking for a much maligned Champ and bring it back to health.
