I'd go for it unless they charge and arm and a leg to ship it.

+1

A "basket case" could cost $300 to put it back into presentable shape.

I'm thinking of purchasing an all original 1970 Deluxe Reverb from Guitar Center for $800. The catch is I have to order it over the phone or online, as it is across the country. I've spoken with a sales rep there, and he says it's all original and in perfect working order, just a little bit rough around the edges cosmetically. Should I pull the trigger?

I purchased my '65 Melody Maker from Guitar Center through their Vintage Store. The guitar was actually in Cherry, NJ. They sent photos and called me to follow-up. The guitar was packed VERY WELL and I was not charged shipping. They did collect sales tax.

I started looking at GC as an option for finding my MM after talking to an acquaintance. He had just bought a '59 Melody Maker 3/4 from GC and was happy with it. And it looked great.

GC allows you to try the item for a few days and you can ship it back if you don't like it.

So - I would tell you to buy with confidence. You could see if they would ship it to a local GC for you to test drive first.

True...GC lets you return.

I'd make sure any S&H is reimbursable.

I was at the Nashville GC recently... they had a DR that was listed as a 66, but something didn't look right. After taking a closer look it turned out to be a 70s DR with a black face plate. They were asking $2500!

It's a good thing you know about all the shady shenanigans the unscrupulous will try in order to scam their customers!

It is too bad some GC's do this...Glad the one in my area is honest and stands behind all thier sales very well and prices thier used stuff pretty decently and are willing to deal, as the 65 BFSR I bought for $999 proved a while back.

I doubt that GC intentionally misrepresented the amp, but they probably should have checked it more closely when they bought it.

The problem with GC is that most of the sales staff there don't know jack fookin' chit about the used vintage gear they sell. Not that it bothers them -- there'll always be some shmuck walking through the door with more money than knowledge who will find himself fleeced quicker than he can say "I thought all Jensen speakers were made in Italy?".

I go there quite often and have bought several amps from them, but they don't know the things we know to look for,I've talked to several customers and pointed out problems with different amps they were looking at also....the sales staff probably didn't like it either, but they know better than to say anything to me.
I bought my '66 Pro Reverb there, they had a high price on it and listed as a '65,I told them that it was a '66,and they didn't believe me...that is until they discovered they had the wrong tag on it and the price was about $250 cheaper, because it was a '66!.....then I bought it.
