hey ya'll, don't post much here, but have a question that im sure someone out there in fender land can answer. I have a 1967 bassman blackface with an AA165 curcuit. i love the amp to death but was wondering if maybe i need new tubes. i can turn all the nobs up to 11 and still barely get any distortion. i know these things can scream normally.

I'm only asking this here because im not sure if it's my speakers that are holding the amp back or if it may need some servicing. I play with 2 celestion G12T-75's and i have heard that those speaker refuse to break up even at rediculous volume levels. so, what do you guys think? Is it my speakers holding the amp back from tonal bliss, or does the old girl need a little work done to her? I bought the amp about a year ago and haven't done anything to it but play and record with it. any ideas?

And thanks to all that read/answer,
J

You've had the amp a year and the problem is just now occurring? What did the amp sound like when you bought it?

When was the amp last serviced? When were the tubes last replaced? When was the bias on the power tubes last checked? If you don't know the answer to those questions, I would suggest you get the amp serviced. If the answer to those questions is more than one year ago, I suggest you get the amp serviced.

I agree with Bluesky... should have amp looked at by a good tech. No OD sounds like the PS filter caps maybe getting tired. Or the amp is biased way too cold. Or both.

????

Unless someone's altered the chassis, such an amp does not exist. The AA165 Bassman was available for less than one month......in January of 1965. Double-check to be certain you're working with the correct schematic for the amp.

tanks to all of your guys answering back so fast. to answer any of the questions you guys had, i bought the amp about a year ago from guitar center (eww) and i have never had it serviced myself. When i bought it they said it had new tubes but to me they look a little worn so im sure it could use some tubes. as far as the AA165, i think someone altered it. It had AB165 on the paper inside the amp but someone crossed it out in pencil and wrote AA165 so im assuming someone doctored it. That or guitar center didn't realize they had a 65 instead of 67.

More to the point, it sounds like you guys don't think it's the speakers. It would make sense to me as well but i wanted some sort of "second opinion" as i know lots of people out there play a 67 bassman through a marshall 1960A cab and it sounds great (those cabs come with the speakers i have). so i guess i will have to call my local amp wizard and have him give a check out of my baby.

thanks so much for the input!

Buying a vintage amp with an unknown history is always a crap-shoot. It's best to definitively determine when the amp was built, correlate that to the appropriate factory schematic, then compare the chassis to the specific drawing. That's the only accurate method of locating and quantifying any mods that have occured over the years.

Best of luck, HTH
