s3mamill, Looking closer at the photos, seems like one bypass cap (off the 12AT7) was replaced. You may want to look under the cap hood to see if those were replaced. And by what brand/value caps--- before firing up the unit.

Beemer, You mean the 5th cap from the right in Reb's photo? Its missing or different in mine. There seems to be a small black cap in its place. I did fire it up for a few yesterday, but I'll check into this before I do again. Where is the cap hood?

Yep,that's a 25uf/25vdc,yours has been replaced, but that's okay, since my pics were made I've replaced the electrolytics in mine, they need to be at some time, those big Astrons and Mallory caps are the originals, and they will dry out.
The filter cap hood is on the back side of the chassis, you will have to take it out of the cabinet.

Thanks for the info Reb.

Here are a bunch of photos, but the first one is of the cap in question. Does it look like an appropriate replacement? All the other caps look original as do the other transformers.

The tank is a replacement, but a usa made accutonics tank seems like a pretty good choice.

+1

The offshore junk should be avoided.

The unit is in remarkably pristine shape!

Thanks Arjay. As someone who came of age in the late 90s/ early 2000's its cool to me that one can still find this vintage stuff in mostly original shape and for what are mostly reasonable prices, for the amps at least (Vintage fender guitars seem to cost as much as a car, however).

But at least we can still enjoy a portion of Fender's history without the need for a TARP bailout from congress or waiting for some fatcat relative to assume room temperature.

Rawk on!

Ha! Arjay you're spot on!

Beemer or Reb, any thoughts on this replaced cap? Is it correct? Thanks.

According to the schem and the layout diagram, the .002mf value is correct. However, the 600VDC rating seems to be a bit inflated given its purpose. As for it being a mustard Astron, I've seen those in many brownface Fenders of the era.

Arjay, not the Astron, the little black and blue one a little to the right in the photo. Its marked 25V, 22uF. It looks like there was a mallory there, or at least there is in Rebs photo of his original board. Beemer pointed it out, so I took a closer pic of it so I could ask about it. I'll take a look at the schematic, but I have about 5 minutes of experience with them so I'm hoping someone here could glance at it. It also looks like its soldered in place differently than I've seen before.

Ah so......my bad.

It does seem to be a skosh on the "modern" side, doesn't it?

The schematic does show a 25/25 cap as part of a stabilizing RC network tying the pentode's cathode to ground. Perhaps the original component became problematic and that 22/25 was the closest value a previous owner could find.

Unless there were some audible issue, I wouldn't give it a second thought.

Cool, this is just what I wanted to know. I won't wonder about this cap anymore.

The unit sounds pretty good, though I'm still dialing it in to see what sort of tone is in there.

Thanks.

You reverberators out there: What sort of settings do you like on your reverb units?

I've found it can make things sound really treble-y if your not careful. I like it with the tone around 3, dwell around 4 and mix at 7. I tend to play overdriven and I like the way it fills the tone out. I really like the way it sounds with my vibro champ. I'm still trying to pair it up with with my 5e3 successfully.
