These years, 1964-65 were kinda a transistion to standard BF. I've seen BF tolex with old style white knobs (ala brownface). Anyhow, during this time Fender often didn't place it's logo onto the grille of Princetons.

See if your amp is an AA964 or 6G2-A circuit. I've seen some with older brownface 5Y3GT rectifiers and some with 5AR4. But, I believe this transition was completed by early 1965.

For sake of historical completeness, I wouldn't place a logo onto the amp.

None of the blackface "student" amps received a grill logo until circa mid '65. The definitive method to determine whether your amp had one installed is to gently probe the upper left corner of the baffle board to see if there is a logo "shelf" beneath the cloth. If present, the amp likely had the Fender logo.

If built in December 64, then it won't have a logo...see mine in photo (also Dec 64) and it does not have the logo ledge under the grill cloth.

And as Arjay stated, only the professional level of amps got the logo in 64...in fact the 64/65 catalog Fender Catalog I have even shows the Deluxe (Non Reverb) did not have a logo in 64!

My '68 Princeton has the Fender logo. BTW, I bought it for $25 from a guy who needed beer money. He had found it in a house he was remodeling, had in the back of his truck, and it snowed on the amp. Lucky it was grill side up. I carefully defrosted it, and took it to my amp tech. It fired right up, he change the two wire plug to a three wire ground. It has the original tubes & speaker.

That's not a '68, Tony.

The speaker date (16th week of '66) pegs it as a couple of years older, as do the blackface cosmetics.

Nice amp.

And an even nicer price!

You mean it's a '66? Here's the tube chart:

Well duh! It is a '66, the AA964 circuit number clearly shows that http://ampwares.com/amplifiers/fender-blackface-princeton/.

I don't know why I thought it was a '68. I've had it for about 5yrs and looked up info on it.

No, you never have....you are a wise & true friend :!:

I'm glad that I read this topic, and wasn't meaning to 'drift' the thread. I pulled out the Princeton and have played thru it for the past couple of hours. I don't play it much because the tubes are 'vintage' and original, and don't want to damage the speaker if there is any dry rot around the cone, but what the heck.

Your caution regarding the speaker is understandable, Tony -- those Fender-marked Jensens are relatively rare. Your Princeton is likely one of the last Fender amps to be factory-equipped with one since FMI threw Jensen under the bus near the end of the 1966 model year when bulk-pricing negotiations for speakers between the two companies collapsed.
