I haven't played on a DR in a long, LONG time...

can the DR (silverface or BF, not the reissue) be used as a low volume practice amp, and still get the crunch it's known for? or is it into the "WAY loud" category before then?

here's the thing... I've pretty much always had my tremolux, and I've always ran pedals with it... but lately I've been really into early zztop and the black keys, trying to get that cranked tone that I associate with a cranked DR or a tweed deluxe. and I may not be describing it right... I can get closer with my peavey vypyr than I can with the fender... I put it on the deluxe setting, dirt channel, cranked gain...

To some degree it depends on your definition of "low volume".

The Deluxe Reverb doesn't have a master volume control or anything like that, so it only distorts when it begins to approach its full rated output. The volume will be up around 105dB before it gets crunchy. So if by "low volume" you mean "while practicing with a band", maybe the DR would fit your needs. But if by "low volume" you mean "playing alone in your living room", it'll be too loud for natural distortion -- you'll want some sort of pedal for low-volume distortion.

that's what I figured... the last time I played one, it was with a drummer and a bassist about 20 years ago... and it wasn't on hardwood floors... like my 10x10 office has... and I have yet to find a pedal that sounds like a cranked DR or deluxe

It won't be "nose-bleed" loud (like a TR or SR) but the DR is still capable of an uncomfortable level of noise unless properly prepped at the input via a decent OD stompbox. I use Fulltone's OCD but there are other great pedals to choose from as well.

actually I was just looking at this one...
Way Huge Red Llama
http://youtu.be/jh0k7WBDTI0

it seems to get that early sabbath, zztop, black keys sorta tone... my vt999 is great clarity... like ACDC, priest, metallica, or even skynyrd... you can use just a touch of gain with it which is nice... or go bawls out... but it doesn't get that "muddy" warm tone of just got paid/tush

Since I haven't owned a tweed Fender since 1966 and I'm not particularly enamored of their tone, I really couldn't offer an opinion. I use my OCD as a clean boost, basically -- especially when soloing with a Strat's neck pickup, which typically has a lower output than the bridge and middle coils.

ok. I have only humbuckers (2 epiphones and a charvel with duncan pickups)

I've just been experimenting with that muddy, early zztop (or black keys) sound lately..

my normal OD pedal is a VT999 not exactly boutique but it nails that marshall JCM sound perfectly, and can get even higher gain... AC/DC, priest, early metallica

but it'd almost too articulate for stuff like early zep, zztop stuff where the sound was a bit muddier... even with the bright switch off, it's very clear/precise sounding. I might try changing the tube though...

it's not a sound I always want... but sometimes... even the real early sabbath stuff had that sound to a degree

Much of the early Zep studio material (at least on the first two albums) was Page with a Telecaster plugged straight into a Supro Thunderbolt.
