My first "nice" guitar was a 1965 Melody Maker that my dad bought me when I was in 6th grade. I sold in during grad school because I needed money. I found this one a couple of weeks ago.... a birthday gift to myself. One piece mahogany body, one piece mahogany neck with a rosewood slab for a fretboard. Pearloid dot inlaid markers.

It has some great checking to the finish. It had non-vintage tuners. I replaced those with a set of vintage 3 on a plate Kluson Deluxe tuners on it. (Gibson) . The vintage bridge was warping - replaced it with a Schaller BadAss (which was used... my dealer gave it to me). Just having fun tripping down memory lane.

Cool guitar! All you need to complete the picture. Maybe one of these:

So if that is the "Cadillac", then my 64 Princeton (no reverb) is a Buick :?:

Nice Score on the Gibson and Beemer, that is one fine looking Princeton Reverb!

Lots of fun..... it sounds 100X better through the vintage Fender amps I have now then my original sounded though the crappy japanese solid state amp I had as a kid. My Original had the Vibrato bridge. I much prefer the wrap around.

When I was younger, I had got pretty good at working the tone and volumne on the guitar to get a lot out that single pick-up.

Beemer - my PR is a 1974 SF..... but I do have this one that's in the neighborhood age wise. :D

Slight OT? WTF?

A post about a guitar on the vintage amps forum....yeah, a bit more than slight, it's completely OT.

The guitar is ugly to boot. And double-posting really helps.

Yeah, that's what I was thinkin', Shimmy(not really). Phans , that's a great guitar!!! My dad got me a '65 SG JR with the vibrato. Was lookin' at them lately, but opted for a Ricky, instead. HAPPY PICKIN' !!! Art

Delete the thread by clicking the "X" at the bottom of your post instead of just deleting the text.

So what! Let the guy have some fun and excitement. Cool guitar.

Phansford, you should have said that Bruce Zinky played the guitar in a surf movie.
Then, the King Gods of Thread Keepers will more welcomely misremember
their self-annointed roles. Tell'em to turn the page.

Happy Birthday! Say, what kind of pickups does your MM sing out with?
Does it play with vintage amps? If yes, it's a good threader here for me.

There are probably a lot of us who wish we had keep the early gear we had.... not for the quality but certainly for the memories. :D Although those low end Fenders and Gibson were good quality.... they just weren't SG's and Strats. There's a 1961 Les Paul Jr. with the SG body (single P-90) at the local shop here. Out of my price range, but a cool little beast.

It not a bad little single coil. Nothing near the P-90 in my 2001 LP Jr. I like the sound, its probably a bit thin at times for some ears. I roll back the tone to 7 1/2 to 5 1/2 and can pull the tone I like out of this guitar. I like playing this particular guitar through my '73 SF Vibro Champ and my '64 Gibson Discoverer Tremolo.

But this is about remembering my Dad who always supported me in these sort of ventures.... including making amplified noise. It was a big expenditure for my Dad to buy me a MM in 1972 ($125 for the MM and a japanese solid state amp). So this has special meaning to me. I thought a few of my "friends" would enjoy seeing this particular piece of vintage gear. And I truly appreciate the kind comments. :D

As someone who's proud to be one of those "friends" Phil, I appreciate this post.

Especially since your Melody Maker reminds me of my first semi-decent guitar, an early '60s two-pickup MM that the prior owner had retro-fitted with humbuckers.

And of course, your Champ Amp is gorgeous.

Rawk on!
