Hendrix - Marshall / They go together like bread and butter.

But I've read recently (I think it was in "Soul of Tone" ) that Hendrix actually used Fenders in the studio. And when I listen to "Hey Joe" it definitely sounds more like a Fender than a Marshall.

My untrained ears ain't the best and it could be my imagination but since reading that and going back and listening to Hendrix's studio stuff I'm starting to think it's true.

Yes, it is true and very well documented in several books.

Hendrix and Fender Stratocasters
Hendrix and Fender amps
Hendrix and non-Fender amps
Hendrix and woman

Here's another "flash" for you......some of the tracks on "Are You Experienced" were allegedly laid down with a Telecaster. This, according to Chas Chandler in some interview I read many years back. I think "Fire" was one of those songs.

Hendrix's first album is so Fender-y that I knew it "back in the day"....namely when I bought it in '66/67,whenever it came out....there wasn't anything on the album about it,no pictures either....you just knew. 8)
Now,at first we thought he was from England,we didn't know he had been gigging in Nashville just a couple of years before,we weren't in "that part of town"...ya dig?

That's alright.

I like Jimi's studio work...a lot. The tones are good, and the creativity is ground breaking, but I have to confess, in my honest opinion most of the live stuff I've seen of him on youtube isn't very good. The great playing is there but the tone is not there and the mix is usually terrible.

Although I do like the Band of Gypsys' live album...er, CD.

Jimi could be on fire or disgusted when he was playing live,I've heard and read of him walking offstage after a couple of songs because he was PO'd....a friend who lived in Florida in the late '60s maintains that at a concert there, something made him mad and he gave the crowd the finger and walked off without playing....I've never read that though, but it could be true.
The Isle of Wight concert,IIRC,was one of his last, and he was clearly disgusted there,so much that after the last song he took the guitar off and just pitched it to the floor.

That's awesome. I can't use a telecaster. The tone is so clear and bright it tells on my sloppy playing to much.

I've never been much of a Tele fan either. I've owned two and never really bonded with them, which is ironic since one of my formulative influences -- Joseph Walsh -- played them often in the studio, primarily on the first two James Gang albums.

It is well documented that at a Tampa show he flipped off the crowd and walked offstage-Glad I was too young to go (but sorry I never got to see JH), but I know a couple of people who did. He used a Jazzmaster (whoo-hooo!!!) on "Fire" and I have read he used Gretsches as well in the studio. I always preferred his studio tone to his live sound.

Arjay, kinda interesting to hear your trials with the Tele. I love Telecasters. And never really played much with Strats. All of my Strats have gone to better homes. I don;t know what it is about a Tele, but the feel of the neck and that bright twangy tone is cool.

BTW... I put Duncan Five-Two pups into my 1992 MIM Tele. Russian PIO's. Thing has a very cool vintage tone. Smoother than my 1957 Tele (which is a twang monster). Those are great pups.

I love Teles and Esquiers:

Seymour Duncan Vintage Stacks in the AVRI 52 Tele and Dimarzio Area T in the Esquier (SCNs in the Strat). And to stay on topic, I use Fender amps just like Hendrix did, and my signature shows where my loyalties lie.

Nice amps. Are the Tweeds from the 1950s? Original tweed or recovered?
What is the difference between the Telecaster & the Esquire, besides one pickup?
Toppscore 8)
