Hey guys,
I recently got my great uncle's Fender Super V front (5B4) after he passed away and got it working. My only problem now is the speakers are dry rotted. I am not sure if they are original or not. All that is on them is 473850 and 10JM1 or 10JMI. Also on the cone it has 214. I am not sure if I am going to recone them or purchase new ones. I know Jensen P10R are the replacement speakers, but I don't know the ohms for it. Does any one know? I live in Louisiana and am having a hard time finding anyone that recones around here. Thanks for any help.

Corey

Sounds (forgive the pun) "super", Corey.

Got any pics?

I think there's a place in Alabama called "Dixie Reconing Service". I'll try to dig up the particulars and post again shortly.

BTW, are the speakers in your 5B4 the field-coil type or permanent magnet?

Rawk on!

Everything I've read shows them as permanent magnet. Did Fender ever use field coils in the early tweeds?

Now that I think about it, maybe not. I do remember the Dual Professional did have two output trannies -- one attached right to each of the speaker frames.

Getting old is hell, Bill!

Thank you for the response. I am not sure about the magnet. I have figured out, I think, how to post pictures. Here it is. Has some wear on it for sure. But I think if I had that many years on me, I'd be looking rough too.

Any ID numbers or codes stamped on those speaker frames, Corey?

BTW, that speaker repair service I mentioned previously is in Birmingham. From what my peeps in the South tell me, they do pretty righteous work.

I did not see anything on the frame. 473850 and 10JM1 were on the back of the magnet. No where could I find a name on the speaker either. I will google Dixie Reconing Service. I personally would rather recone them. Love to hear the speakers as my great uncle heard them, well as close as I can.

I'm drawing a complete blank on the "473850" number, assuming it's a legitimate EIA code. If it is an EIA code, the last three digits would indicate the speaker was manufactured in the 50th week of either 1948 or 1958. 1958 is much too late for the speakers to be original to the amp -- my guess would be '48, which might be consistent for the era. However, most sources indicate that the Jensen P10R or P10Q were OEM for V-front Supers. Jensen's EIA codes are formatted thus: "220XXX". More research is needed.

Scratch my memory. I have about 12 of the 10J11's
including a matching set of 4x10 1954's & 1956's.
I did some research on these speakers a while ago.
I believe they were issued in the early 1950s,
So, a 1952-1953 Super may have had them installed.
I do not recall seeing these speakers before 1954,
but Jensen could very well have produced them.
Just gotta investigate.

Please, anybody, correct me if I am wrong.
I believe these speakers came from Hammond organs
and Magnavox consoles/stereos/TVs of the 1950s.

I believe guitarists installed them in underpowered logistics/situations.
I believe the 10J11s are like the Jensen P10Rs, but cannot handle
the ohms and wattage of the P10Rs.

I believe your 10JM1 is for "10" Jensen/Magnavox"

I am going to have some speaker cabinets made
and will use mine for low powered 30w amp heads.

Hope this info helps.
I could be wrong all over the place, but, I am trying
to remember my research and the possibilities.

Hope this helps. Toppscore 8)

Thanks for the info Toppscore and Arjay. My uncle always had eletronics taken apart in his shop that he was fixing and I can definitely see him taking speakers out of another stereo if the original speakers blew.

The tube sticker states the amp is 90 watts. Anyone know what the ohms for the amp would be? Did Fender stamp that info somewhere and I just haven't found it yet?

that 90 watts is how much it draws from the wall while it's running...like a 100 watt light bulb.
I don't know what the speaker impedence is,maybe somebody else will from memory.
Very Cool amp!
