I'm not interested but thought I'd share.

Looks like it's weathered quite a few storms.

Wow! It would sure be hard to recoup the original purchase price, at that BIN. The amp looks a complete make-over, inside and out. JMO.

I've seen better for less, though not a wide-panel '54.

It looks like it's "all there" but what a ride......if only she could talk!

And talk she probably could, especially with those dual 5Y3GT rectifiers! That thing looks like I feel after a 3 mile run!

My deal about posting the pictures is to share against the OP's 1954 Tweed Twin.
I have my eyes on buying a Tweed/Blonde Twin, but just do not know how they
will fit into my collection (purpose wise) versus the cost and usage. Interesting
to note is the similarity between both 1954 amp's exteriors, tweed conditions.

Bluesky, you are the winner. Congratulations
But, you knew. Was looking for some interesting responses. But, cheers to you :D

This is the third oldest known 4x10 amp or speaker cabinet of any kind in history.
I will be preparing it for daily/weekly usage, depending upon the tones I can produce.

I purchased a 1955 Jensen P10R that needs to replace the 1961 Jensen P10Q.
Several have stated for me not to replace the 1961 P10Q, as recording guitarists,
often added a different (P10Q or P10N) speaker for the recording microphone.
So, we shall see about that.

The other three Jenens speakers are orginal 1954 P10Rs.
I purchased an expensive NOS handle.
Also, I purchased all NOS and unused 1954 GE Tubes ~ not installed, yet.
Last year's bill of health from a SF Bay Area top tech, said all is well from caps
to resistors to pots to tranny's and choke, etc. Plays well and strong.
He did no modifications except add the three prong cord/plug.

So, once I get the 1954 5D6 put together w/newer NOS parts, your reward is . . . . .
I'll ship the 1954 Fender 5D6 4x10 Bassman to you for a month to be A-B tested
against a 1958-1960 5F6A Bassman. Unless I can get my hands on a 5F6A sooner.
I just gotta know for myself what I have. The known 5F6A amps are discussed
as top quality tone machines, but I have to add the 6G4/6G4A Super Amps,
late 1950s Fender Twins, 1964 Super Reverb, 1965 Deluxe Reverb and the
1954 5D6 Bassman into the mix. Blues & Rock "Tone" is my goal/criteria.

I've been told and read on many ocassions that the 1954 5D6 4x10 Bassman
is a better sounding amp than the 1954 5F6A. But, the 5F6A owners disagree
So, as a fun hobby, I want to find out.

There are only eleven known 1954 5D6 4x10 Bassmans that exist, and according
to my research, maybe three have most all of the original components and are
able to play. The others are complete train wrecks, have been recovered, are
missing the trannys/choke, etc. So, in my lifetime, I will get this amp to the forefront
and put it's place in Fender history. I just do not know why other's with 5D6 Bassmans
to do show them off? The only one I have seen in better condition is the one sold
during 2/2011 over-seas to an Asian buyer for $8500. It was in near mint- museum
quality. It is considered to be the newest or last of the 1954 5D6 Bassmans made.
I have chatted with the ex-owner many times. I purchased my 1955 P10R from him.
Also, I've interviewed several others involved with the 1954 5D6 Bassmans.

Toppscore :)

It clearly was not an F series so that left D and E in the narrow panel. It was just chance that I selected your site when I Googled the D schematic. I didn't even look at the name, just saw the same photo of the amp.

I wish I had the kind of disposable cash you apparently have to make a "fun hobby" of collecting "vintage amps" but alas. I have but 1 job in one of the most expensive places to live in the country. A guy can dream though. snif...

You don't have to spend a lot of cash to have a few vintage amps. :D

I'm pretty cheap and I just don't want to spend a lot of money on "collectables". And I play the few items I do have. So I'm sorta/sorta not a collector. My "collection" is a group of "student" amps that for the most part I have found on Craigslist for much less than dealer cost. I have a '66 Champ, '73 Vibro, '69 Princeton, and a 74 Princeton Reverb. All Craigslist finds. I like these amps because they are all hand-wired, point-to-point, American made. I spent just as much or less than someone would for modern amps of similar ilk. Just keep your eyes and ears to the ground and you can find some great vintage amps.

I like the smaller amps because 1) I don't gig, I play for my own enjoyment, so the guys who get out and play should have the bigger amps. 2) Since I don't gig, I don't need a lot of power and that certainly makes the family happy. But these little amps can get pretty loud if necessary.

I do have two larger amps..... one is a '64 Gibson Discoverer Tremolo (think Deluxe but less wattage). The Gibson was found in the basement of a building one of my clients was renovating. It was in scary shape. I knocked $50 off my invoice for the amp and invested another $75 for restoration (a couple of caps, filters, grounded plug, new cord for the footswitch). This is a fun amp.

This is it before restoration.... it was covered in an inch of crud and dust.

I post this with some trepidation as I don't want to make my good friend Retroverbial go into convulsions seeing this Gibson amp. All that said.... I do think he approves... he just like giving me the business about this non-Fender

The wide panel Twin is the first Fender to have independent Treble and Bass controls. Top of the line amp in '54. In many ways, the 5D8 is the first design in the evolution leading up to the Marshall Super Lead - similar input stages, volume controls, mixer, cathode follower-driven tone stack, presence control, etc. These amps sound incredible and they are rare. I have had the opportunity to play one, and the overdrive is the smoothest and richest I have ever heard. Very expressive. The 5Y3 rectos have a beautiful sag. It is a cathode biased amp, so the volume level is perfect for club use.

Mr SD-1. This is very interesting. I have not deeply studied the Twin's beginnings.
I have a 1954 5D6 4x10 Bassman and have studied all of the Tweed 1952 5B6 Bassmans
through to the 1960 5F6A Bassmans. I'd like to know more about the uniqueness of the
1954 5D8 Twin compared to the 1954 5D6 Bassman. Can you share the similarities
and the differences and the "firsts", etc? Thank you. Toppscore :)

That Bassman is a real gem. It appears to be fixed bias whereas the Twin is cathode biased. Very rare. Do you have a schematic? I would love to find out what sort of tone stack and phase inverter circuit you've got in there.
