I used to occasionally play bass through a '60's Bassman. I remember the 'deep' switch made it much quieter and (I guess) deeper. What exactly does that switch do? Does the bass channel with the 'deep' switch off sound like the normal channel with the 'bright' switch off?

The tone-cap values are significantly different between the tone-stacks of the "BASS INSTRUMENT" and "NORMAL" channels -- thus, the sonic bandwidths are voiced for their specific intended applications. Jumpering the channels with a guitar results in some pleasing tones, especially under compressed OD conditions (I used to get some very authentic Claptonesque "woman tones" when using a Vox Tonebender "back in the day").

The deep switch is similarly different from its normal-channel counterpart, acting as a treble bleed/cut bandpass filter. The high-frequency response is limited, which deliberately suppresses some of the normal hiss inherent in all analog-audio tube equipment. The ear perceives an elevated S/N ratio but in reality, it's because the highs are intentionally attenuated.

Yep! What Arjay said. The deep switch kicks in an extra .1uf capacitor in the tone stack. In stock form that would be three .1uf caps, quite the bottom end filter! The additional gain stage in this pre amp, just makes it that more impressive. The normal channel is a different animal. The bright switch kicks in a 120pf cap. This little guy allows more of the high end frequency signal to reach our ears. The 864 and the 165 models differ, in the fact that the bass channel in the 864 only has the extra gain stage. So the channels can be used as a Fender(normal) and a Marshallesque(bass). Actually, that's how my Bassman is configured. But the components are adjusted for guitar and the component values are tweaked to accentuate the channel difference. Art
