NOS tubes would make it tasty; I've found also that the Mullard CV4024 was almost designed to be THE phase inverter tube for Fenders. Well worth the $30.

I might pick one of those up!

Rhust, my bad! The LDR tells me it's a 763 model. Are you into soldering components? Would you want to pop for some NOS tubes? The speaker selection would be important, also. That amp is choice, and can really be a Blues cruiser, if that's up your alley! JMO Art

it is indeed a AB763... 1964 model, I don't want to solder on my amp, but if it's something that needs to be done, the amp tech I found did a great job, the amp sounds superb... it needed the re-bias I'm sure, but that was it, and it sounds much more like it used to.. I'm much less into blues, but I have gigged punk metal and classic rock with this amp... just using different OD/Distortion boxes to get me there...

Again, to get those power tubes working a bit, I'd recommend an attenuator, like the Dr. Z Brake Lite SA, so that you can throttle down the power going to the speakers. Attenuators can change your sound somewhat, but it hasn't been an issue for me on my Bandmaster combo.

Other than that, pedals will help get you there, or ultimately another amp.

I used one of the weber mighty max on loan from the amp shop, to see if that helped, ultimately I'd have to crank the amp to 10 to get the kind of crunch I want and it's still too clean ;) and that would put too much strain on the OT I'm afraid... so controlling the volume with my vt999's master volume seems to work better... I can get a lot of different sounds out of it this way... from clean with a little hair on it, to high gain stuff... very JCM/plexi sounding with a little more gain. ultimately I will probably pick up a Jet city JCA20, or Blackstar... something with plenty of gain on tap at a reasonable price, where I can keep this amp too... or retire it to someone who will use it better if it come to that point. it has the most amazing clean tone... too bad I'm a guy who plays with dirt 90% of the time... either my metal zone, vt999 or my TS7... sometimes the TS7+the vt999 too...

any recommendations on a tweed-ish(black keys, or 'just got paid') pedal?

For your tremolux, I've found the Barber Direct Drive does a great job with crunch, and can easily get into the area of "Just got paid" or a tone that sounds good playing it.

For Black Keys, my Keeley The Fuzz paired with some tremolo and it's close enough to "Burning for You." The Keeley Fuzz also plays well with other pedals on a board; I have it after my Barber so that it can be used alone or as a boost when the Barber is on. Add some delay, and slide sounds nice!!!

yea, the re-bias really made a huge difference! I've also been experimenting with the low input more... it kinda gives it a more subdued tone, and lowers the volume a hair, but is really sweet and clear.

one more question...

I'm using 2 8ohm scorpions in paralell...

could I rewire the cab to be 2 seperate channels and run one speaker off each speaker output... yes I know this would be an 8 ohm load, not a 4 ohm load... would that harm the amp in any way? I just want to experiment with the tone...

I think you'll find that no sonic change will occur with that configuration.
