I like my VOX multi effcts pedal in that it has an AUX in and I can play my iPod through the pedal to my amp for play along but I don't always want that pedal in my chain. Has anyone come up with an AUX in option for these old amps or is there a good way to use a channel as an AUX in? Could the iPod headphone out be attenuated through a divider or some sort to a channel to make this happen?

You can use the input channel of a Boss Looper (RC-3) to feed your iPod into a vintage amp. I do it like this with my Fender Princeton Reverb.

Cheers

I really hope not.

Music played through an instrument amp sounds bad, as an amp was not made to reproduce sound but to create sound. Then trying to play a guitar through the same amp with the music sounds even worse.

Having said that, if you don't mind the crappy sound, maybe plug the iPod into an unused input on the amp. 1/8" to 1/4" adapter for headphone out of iPod to amp input. Typically input 1 is louder than input 2 on amps, might try switching guitar and iPod to get the best balance.

But, yuck!

So do you think the aux in on SS amps I've seen is for use with just headphones? Also I tried my pedal with a Peavy and recorded to my Mac. When it played back it came out through my amp but I don't remember it sounding so bad really and besides I think I was really just interested in how well I was playing along and not too interested in the quality of the tone. I'll try it again soon to hear how it does.

My concern with going straight in with the iPod to the input is the possibility of overdriving the input by accident. Should I be concerned or is this an impossibility?

Of course you're right. But I thought he was asking about backing tracks ... doesn't really matter.

If you use a Boss Looper, you'll be able to adjust output volume. It has a knob for this. I think you should not go directly into the amp, iPhones make funny noises when you switch them on/off while they play music.

Cheers

As shimmilou stated, the sound will be terrible, and IMO, difficult to really get a good feel to hear if you're playing the way you are wanting to. I have no idea if this is a possibility or not, but do what I am going to do and get a cheap PA system. The one I am going after is $200 brand new and should fulfill your needs. I like to play along as well and my stereo just doesn't cut it when I want to turn the volume of my amps up.
