The numbers peg it as made by CTS in the 13th week of 1964. It could very well be original to the amp though by this time Fender was applying the square blue-and-silver Fender sticker to most of its speaker magnets.

My wife would take issue with that. She alternately accuses me of suffering from "DKS Syndrome" and "CRS Syndrome". Periodically both, simultaneously.

In retrospect, I think your speaker is not original to the amp due to the frame color. During this era, most Fender OEM speaker frames were painted semi-gloss black enamel or (in the case of CTS) a bronzed-plum color. Your's looks like it's been cadmium plated -- usually reserved for upscale audiophile-grade drivers. Fender did use a silver lacquer later on but it was generally during the silverface era. As well, the P/N does not appear to be formatted as a legitimate FEIC or FMI ID number.

It looks to read "NL", Reb.

Which makes the amp's birthday sometime in December of 1964......ie: it's a bonafide pre-CBS piece, and a member of a very exclusive club.

SAINT LEO MIGHT'VE ACTUALLY TOUCHED THIS AMP!

Really cool pick-up! Is yours an AA764 circuit running a GZ34/5AR4 rectifier? I have one of these beauties. Tone is very unique to that rectifier (compared to 5U4GB powered PR's). Enjoy it!

Edit: In my excitement, didn't realize your amp is a Princeton. Does it have the AA964 circuit with the 5AR4? Thanks!

Arjay, Thanks! Dang your eyes are good. I only see the chart, not much written detail. :(

Great amp! Enjoy it. These things are absolute tone monsters. Thank Goodness for Fender and 6V6GT tubes! (6L6GC ain't bad either).

Actually, it's my skills with imaging software.

I downloaded the pic to my hard drive, opened it in MS PhotoDraw, then enlarged it and played with the contrast to make the tube chart more readable.

A zit-popper with a 4G iPad prolly could've done it in one tenth the time it took me.

You should have your tech inspect the filter-cap can and note the date on it -- if it's older than ten years, it should be replaced as well. And ditch the death cap too.

It does sound nice. But, I'm considering swapping it out for a Weber.

well you certainly have a myriad of choices and opinions to go with them....:)
I have used CTS alnicos in the BFSR I have owned. I am pertial tot he alnico tone and response. One ceramic I use and totally dig is and EVM12L but thats in a DR.

Email Weber taweber@webervst.com and tell him what you are looking for tone wise and he will suggest. Very helpfull to me in the past.

Good luck with your search for tone......
