I recently acquired an old speaker cabinet that has a vintage Jensen speaker in it. I'm trying to identify exactly what it is and if it would work in an amplifier. Its a Jensen Concert Series with a green basket and has a bell on it. The codes on the speaker are as follows:C12R8 C7640 220536. I believe the speaker to maybe be from the 60's. So from what I read online about speaker codes is that its a ceramic magnet 12" 25watt speaker? Not sure if this is accurate. Also trying to find out the ohms rating is. Couldn't find any info on what the 8 means after the C12R code. I'd like to try it in my Blues Jr NOS if the speaker would work in the amp. Any help would be appreciated. Also the other cabinet I got has an orange basket Utah speaker. The codes on that speaker are C S12JC-W 328683. Maybe someone could help me identify that one too. Thanks.

From your data: Speaker #1 = 220536 = Jensen (220), made 1965 (5), 36th week.

Speaker #2 = 328683? = Utah (328) 1966 (6) and 83rd week? (Must have been an extra long leap year) :lol: [ guess it could be 1968 (68), 3rd week... WAG].

Here's a partial list of speaker manufacturer's codes:

Thanks. Any way to find out if its a 4 or 8 ohm speaker and how many watts. Or if either is useable in an amplifer. Or are they made for PA only.

I just Google or EBay the part number. For the Jensen (C12-R8) I get:

Does yours look like this one? Concert Series is usually a good speaker. Worth a try.

I couldn't find anything on the Utah, with a quick search. May need to try several times throughout the week to get a hit.

Good luck!

The Concert Series Jensen is more than adequate for musical instrument applications -- I have a pair of those very speakers in my '67 silverface Bandmaster and they sound fabulous.

Your data is correct -- it's a 25-watt ceramic-magnet loudspeaker made in the 36th week of 1965. If in good repair and it's an 8-ohm voice coil, it should work well in your BJr.

You're apparently missing the final digit in the Utah's EIA codes -- a photo may help with its identification and specifications. Use a DVM to determine the impedance.

C12R =
C = Ceramic Magnic
12 = 12 Inche Cone
R = 25 watt, 1" voice coil

8 = 8 ohms
==============
The other guys helped
220 = Jensen EIA code
5 = 1965
36 = 36th week of 1965

These rules apply to the Jensen speakers from 1952-1968
The Jensen codes change in the 1970s.

Hope this helps. Toppscore 8)

Thanks for the info guys. The speaker came in a home made cabinet. I unplugged the speaker in my blues jr and ran a cable out to the cabinet. The Jensen sounds amazing! I did some measurements and unfortuneatly looks like the bell cap is too long to fit in the blues jr. It won't clear the output tubes. But it was still a good find. A woman called the local radio swap show and said she had old music equipment to give away for free if someone would come and haul it away. I got 3 cabs with speakers, a knight tube microphone pa with vintage rca 6l6 tubes, and a stereophonic tube driven turntable that has vintage mullard el84s. Everything works. Not bad for free. I ran the speaker cabs out of the knight pa and plugged my strat into the microphone input. Works and sounds awesome. Also played some records on the turntable. The turntable came with matching speaker cabs with oxfords. But anyway the Jensen sounds the best out of the lot so I guess ill just run it externally until i find a permanent home for it.

The bell cover is removable -- there's a single screw, concealed beneath the label. Removing the cover will not alter the speaker's tone in any measureable way.

Yes!!!!
Think 1950s Tweed Fender Bassmans . . .
Top two Jensen P10R's installed without the pretty Speaker Blue Belles
and the bottom two Jensen P10R's installed with the Blue Belles :mrgreen:

Jense was PC correct, even back in the 1950s.
All speaker possibilities got fair shakes :shock:
