I saw this and can see it needs love. my question is... if I were to take this on as a labor of love, and make it correct, with proper speakers, and re-finishing...

http://dallas.craigslist.org/ftw/msg/2977101715.html

would I recoup my costs from selling it? I'm not sure what a refinished cabinet for a bassman would sell for. I have some experience in cabinet building, and re-upholstery, so I think I could refinish this... but I'd like to at least pay for the parts I'd have to buy, so I don't get the stink-eye from my wife.

if it wouldn't cover costs, then would it be blasphemy to change it to a 2x10 cabinet for my tremolux?

IMO $125 for that empty cabinet is not worth it. Like you said, think about all of the electronics you would have to buy. To much time, money and effort. Again, this is just my opinion. You don't have to listen to me.

I kinda thought the same thing, but wanted to check...

I'd be out the $125, 200+ for the speakers, plus the tolex and grillcloth, etc... easily 400-500 in parts... I don't care about getting paid for my labor, this would be a hobby project... but idk if the refinished cab would even pay for the speakers, since it would be very non-original at that point.... even if I found the vintage speakers to match.

Fender did not build this cabinet. There are not enough "fingers" in the corner joints. As well, I'm not seeing the holes on top for the threaded anchor bushings which are used to lock the amp head to the speaker enclosure nor am I seeing holes in the sides where a pair of 16-inch tilt-back legs and their stops would be mounted.

Is it worth $125 as a "pro bono" hobby project?

Perhaps. If it were built to the correct Bassman/Bandmaster dimensions of 21" x 32" x 11.5", I'd seriously consider it.

But you should be aware that it's not an authentic vintage cab.

THAT is what I needed to know! it's not worth my time if it's not the real deal... had it been real, I would hate to see a vintage piece not get fixed

If you have a genuine need for a 2 x 12 cab, that might suit the requirement if it's otherwise built sturdy enough. No, it wouldn't be the "Real McCoy" but for a stage monitor or an enclosure to keep in the basement or garage it might merit a quick visual inspection. The lumber alone is likely worth the asking price.

Just something to consider......

need, no. if it was the real deal though, I couldn't in good conscious let it waste away like that... I was just trying to save a piece of vintage fender..., is kinda what I do... my last project was a car I rebuilt to keep it on the road... I was just on to my next project to protect from the elements ;)

+1...I am with Arjay on this being a good project.

Offer him $75 and see what he says, especially since you know it is not a genuine Fender Cab, use that with him.

It would make a good project. I don't think you'll spend $400 - $500 in restoration of it...Tolex might run $35, Corners and feet $25, Legs (if you want them) $35, Grill cloth $30...2x12 Weber 12A125's for $200...$325 total...so only $400 total including the cab!

The cab may not be Fender but looks like it was a decent build, with finger joints, Tolex is already removed, so just some final sanding to do...and away you go.

Would make a nice project cab for your Tremolux and the 2x12 Webers in this cab would probably sound pretty sweet.

FWIW

My sentiments precisely.

If the cab's dimensions were correct, by the time I was done with it, it would be virtually indistinguishable from a genuine Fender cab.

If a hobby and self-personal amp, this is a great buy because Fender factory cabinets are made to last and not make Fender look bad. The work, wood, measuring, carpentry and factory specs are done. Add your own toppings, flavors & cream coating. Buy the speakers you want for personal use.

But, there are already plenty of brand new factory made 2x10 speaker cabinets
with or without speakers for $100-$300 and that includes FREE SHIPPING!

Once you change the Fender, it is no longer a Fender, just a cabinet that USED
to be a Fender. You will not know which speakers to install and not know which
speakers a buyer might like or dislike. Plus can you give the new buyer a
speaker warranty? Does your cabinet have four or eight speaker bolts and
does the buyer need your total of installed speaker bolts? Is your electronics
hooked up serial or parallel? Closed or open back panel? Handles on top or
Handles on the side or both?

The EBay buyers can get all of their needs met from professional fulltime
speaker cabinet makers, including speaker options installed? for $300!!!
Honestly, would you rather buy from you, a one time part-timer or a full
fledge full-time speaker cabinet company with warranty, installation and
plenty of options? including shipping, colors, speakers, hardware,
electronics/wiring, etc?

Plus, how much time will you spend seeking parts, pieces, labor, shooting
photos, posting on EBay, waiting & checking, paying EBay/Paypal,
possible returns, etc.

Hey. Hope I opened up a couple of options for your. Toppscore 8)

I'm really thinking about it, but I really wanted to go with a 2x10 cabinet for my tremolux, and sell my 2x12, loaded... or sell the speakers and change the baffle only to make my current cab a 2x10(cheapest way)

I emailed the guy and asked for dimensions, if this is smaller than my current cabinet, I might pull the trigger at 75-100, change the baffle to a 2x10 and refinish in black tolex and the gold/tweed grill cloth that would match my tremolux. selling my cabinet would fund the project's speakers.

If you strive for authenticity, then know this; the Tremolux uses a smaller enclosure than the Bassman/Bandmaster cab. IIRC, it measures 17.5" high by 28" wide and uses the 14-inch tilt-back legs.

not necessarily... plus, thanks to you, I know it's not authentic anyway. it would just be a closer "appearance-match" for the head.

plus since the internet came into being since I built the cabinet I have... I can now get the piggy-back hardware, and tolex to make it look like they belong together.

if I build a cabinet from scratch though, I'll use the tremolux dimensions.
