I always budget $200 for servicing, maintenance, and safety upgrades whenever I pick up a new vintage piece. Usually the cost ends up being considerably less but I always plan on a worst-case scenario just in case......

well the it way it's worked out is that i've listed the amp for him here locally for a reasonable price plus wiggle room. I love the amp but its just not in our family budget as times are hard. I didn't push it hard, just ran a little overdrive, compression, chorus, and delay through an array of VS pedals (route 66, liquid chorus, axle grease delay) because I didn't want to abuse the girl in her old age.

I think I'll just end up getting a 65 DRRI so I have a warranty and don't have to budget for all the maintenance a worse case scenario vintage amp may bring. Plus I can get a drri for 8 easy payments of under $150. :|

Many of the folks I know who've bought new DRRI's have spent several orders of magnitude more on repairs and maintenance than I've spent on my all-original '68 DR. I'll take the 40-year old amp over "new" any day of the week.

I just did a total rebuild on an '07 DRRI's power supply a month ago -- $370 flushed down the crapper due to faulty workmanship, the owner's ignorance, and some really bad advice from a local guitar shop. It was one month out of warranty......

I would prefer the 40 year old amp too... its just if I have the money I can't find the amp before my wife finds out I have the money. when she discovers I have the money, I find the amp but am reminded we need this and this and this and that LOL

Tony, all I can say is I have an old BFPR and it has not given me any problems. Really, all I did was replace the cap cap (available from AES--I recommend the 30/20/20/20 at 525VDC versus the 475VDC rated one) and tubes. And it's been over a decade ago (like 15 years), since I bought it. At that time it was $650 & that was stretching the budget to get the amp. Look at what it's worth today. So, you can't lose money on a good initial purchase. There will always be a demand for these old original workhorses.

Something, I don't really know you can say about many of today's products.

Beauty of the old amps is the relative simplicity of the components...not saying that everybody with a soldering iron and some Radio Shack parts can do wonders with them, but as far as solid construction and tried and true circuitry...they are masterpieces.

Yikes! That's scary. What was the bad advice? Did he try to plug in 6L6s?
