The matched pairs of 5881's are easily worth $125 each.

Thanks I am Blessed for sure !

Sure wish those 5881's were some nice RCA 6L6gc's for my Bandmaster Reverb

Funny that Bandmaster does not want to be found in any text I can find or schematics.

its a 1968 SF drip edge, according to the tube chart its a 5AR4 GZ34 Rectifier tube and 6L6GC's

All I can find info on are 5U4GB or SS rectified models

Then there is the crazy TFL5005X supposedly designating it as an export model ????

One crazy amp, but it is bulging with sweet tones !!!

So the plate voltage is over 400 and those sweet 5881's might not last long in there ???

Man this stinks, i have all these awesome vintage NOS right in front of me and i'm running Chinese Valve art in my amp !!!!!

Thanks Arjay for the schematic

Don't know why you couldn't use the 5U4GB. As for the 5881's, those tubes were center rated, not max rated. Most data sheets refer to that center rating, which would give them a long life under those conditions. I've used NOS Tungsol 5881's in my Bassman(475vdc plate) for many hours of solid operation. If those tubes are pulls, then their strength is another story. Art

Despite the 5881's modest published specs, Leo routinely pushed these bottles to 448VDC in many of the tweeds and brownface models. I wouldn't use them in an ultra-linear platform but any amp with plate voltages at or below 475VDC should be safe for them, assuming that proper idle-bias protocols are observed.

So would you stay with the original 5AR4 or switch up to the 5U4GB ?

Thanks again guys !

Chris, I'd try both, and see what you like. The 5U4 may be more to your liking for Blues. Can't really make your sonic call from here. Now, if you see smoke emanating from the amp, head for the nearest exit, and tell the fire squad Arjay sent you to make the test. He'll take it from there. Art

I went around this small town years ago looking for old radio and tv repairmen and asking if they had old tubes....I found several good ones but not many,I gave $100 for 5 or 6 tube caddies like the one pictured and have hundreds of old tubes, but no more for guitar amps....some are really old for radios,I might try to sell them someday, check to see what kind you have, just because they won't work in your amp, somebody else might be searching for an unusual tube.
