Yep...I would get some good preamp and power tubes and put them in to see what a difference that makes and go from there.

Sadly it was that sweet little RCA / Mullard GZ34, i put a china made spare in there and 90% of the problems went away.

The cheap Ruby was one of the ones I had pulled from my DRRI due to buzzing.

So I'm in search of a decent 5AR4 again !!!!

The TAD's and JJ's worked fine in the combos, should be fine in the Bandmaster head.

The volume pot on the reverb trem side is scratchy and has a bump in volume if you push slightly down on it, i'll try deoxit then and most likely replace.

I noticed all the carbon comps are still in there too.

One note on TAD rectifier and output power tubes... they don't really burn off much of the impurities during manufacturing. So, don't be surprised if the tube have a violet "storm" the first week or so of use (maybe this is waht Jimi meant by "Purple Haze"). :P

This lightshow should settle down after 12-15 hours of use. If not, you may want to double check the bias (for output tubes) and B+ (for rectifiers). Both results should be rock steady---at idle, no input, volume at zero, speakers connected. If the values are wandering around, may want to think about another set of tubes.

Chinese made tube are unfortunately noted for this phenomenom.

Yes sir I'm on the hunt as we speak for some 6L6's

I have another sovtek gz34 on the way, thats what i used last time on my DRRI and it worked fine.

I'm loaded with good 12AX7's and 12AT7's and a few 5751's, extra 6L6's are a lot harder to get ahold of !

I do believe a 5751 is going in V-2, or maybe a 12AY7 ???

Did ya ever make a simple mistake ? twice ??

I for whatever reason was thinking v-4 was the first stage of preamp for the reverb side, i changed nearly every tube except v-2.
I pulled a brand new jj 12AX7 out of there and put in an RCA.
No more bees in a box, no more flabby bass, all the paino like lows and warm as can be tone you could want !
I have yet to put the RCA GZ34 back in, however I'll bet its fine too.

Got the volume up in the low 3's and she sings like a Fender ought to.

Gotta find some more good NOS preamp stuff ! todays stuff stinks !

Yeah, with these amps there are so many variables. Luckily, I'm no stranger to multiple mistakes! In my estimation, it's just a matter of plugging along till you get it right. A personal observation: after struggling with a problem, letting it go for a day, and then looking at the situation again, has always helped me. Art.....Sounds like an old man, huh?

At first I thought swapping out the rectifier had made a huge difference in the added buzz to the low notes.
What had happened was that it was later in the day and i didn't give it a fair chance at volumes over 1.8 to 2, not enough to even cause the buzz.
last night I made sure v-2 and v-4 were good solid 12AX7's reinstalled the RCA GZ34 and let her rip a bit.
There was enough spank and grind to bring a smile to your face !

clean enough at 2.1 to play the opening stuff on Over The Hills And Far Away (Zeppelin) and have it sound sweet, then hit the button on my Cmatmods Signa Drive and head into all kinds of overdriven bliss.
