I fired up it up today and all seems well and good. I'm thinking no smoke is a good thing right? I haven't shocked or burned myself either. I turned it on with all the old tubes in it first but now I'm going to put in the new 6L6s. Do you guys have any advice about bias adjustment?

Summarizing the work I have done so far; grounded line cord, grounded conveinience socket, death cap removed, all caps replaced with the old ones saved, all 6L6 replaced, new front panel installed, replaced flaky reverb pot, replaced resistors on the 6L6 sockets, new light bulb and red jewel, new knobs. I fired it up and all seemed well. I tried it out and it sounded wonderful except that the treble control for the vib channel didn't work. I found that I had soldered one leg of the cap into the wrong hole. Fixed it and am really happy with the final tone. I havent done a complete blackface conversion since it requires a few resistor and one cap change but Ill use it as is for now and see how I like it. I am thinking of getting some resistors and some test treminals so I can just hook up a meter and adjust the bias but I'm not sweating that just yet. It's almost time to order up the tolex, grillcloth, corners, handle and straps to finish it off. This restore had been fun thus far and I am antsy about getting it to look as new again. I want to install a line out and a few other mods but for now I am stoked with a nice working powerhouse of an amp.

Completely Satisfying isn't it !

I'm way more apt to hunt up some Silver Face amps now.
My Bandmaster find showed me the way, Still lov'n my blackface Bassman, but I'm a lot less snobbish about the S/F stuff.

ENJOY !!!

BB...Glad you are opening your amp apeture! Nothing wrong with SF amps, as long as you stay away from the Ultra-Linear stuff...and even those can be good for parts :!:

I've carved out a spot in the basement for all my music stuff. In extream cases I have a water problem to deal with so I wiz banged an amp dolly to keep them off the floor and to move my stuff should the flooding begin. I made it with a short shelf at the bottom so I can slip in a pedal board I made. I still have to screw in a power strip to the back of the bottom shelf and that will be done. Next on the list is to buy a wardrobe cabinet from Ikea and mod it to hold all my guitars and related stuff. The wardrobe will have casters so it can be moved.

Sounds like you've gotten most of the work done, and it sounds great so that's fantastic....I do like the idea of the bias test points,I've seen that mod on some boutique amps and that's handy. :D

There's nothing fundamentally wrong with the ultra-linears as long as a couple of specific protocols are understood and observed......

A) -- the amp will never break up, compress, or overdrive in the conventional manner of a blackface (or even an early silverface). Ever. These models were designed, engineered, and built for a single mission: LOUD AND CLEAN.

B) -- the push/pull OD and master volume control are best left ignored. Instead, dime the MV, use the individual channel volume pots for traditional volume control, and rely on a carefully-selected array of stompboxes to deliver whatever voicings and effects are desired.

Hey Arc, glad to hear I'm not the only one with an old basement issue. All amps and cabs are always elevated and the dehumidifier got kicked in last week. Actually when it gets really humid, I move the amps upstairs, into AC bedrooms. Luckily, I only have three amps to shepherd. And I totally know what you mean about wanting the amp to look good after all the work you've done! Way to go with the rehab! Art

I keep thinking about my new Bandmaster's looks

I don't want to shy away from the SF look, I kinda like it.

It might be blasphemy but I was thinking about swapping tolex to the Mojo Surf green to accent the SF colors.

Just a thought at the moment, I have not done a tolex swap so........

There are several surf green amps available on Ebay as I type this.

Some of them have been listed for over a year.

If you can deduce why (and it's not much of a stretch) you'll understand why such a swap is a risky proposition should you ever decide to sell your amp.

Just sayin'......

point well taken !

Coming from a guy (myself) who has had a catastrophic financial meltdown and had to rebuild from the bottom.

Ya just never know when you might have to sell off your beloved gear.

My point precisely.

If this were a discussion about real estate, the operative phrase would be "curb appeal".

My buddy just bought a surf green super sonic. I can't say I'm a fan of the color but on this note I believe you can't get the surf green tolex as it is a limited edition amp.

Back to my amp... I don't like the "been through hell and abused all along the way" look my amp had when I got it. I still have it in the back of my head that I could put this chassis in a new combo cabinet or custom cabinet and keep it forever but till then this is my learning amp. I might mod it until it's unrecognizable but hey... it was free to me and I have dumped more into it than I care to mention thus far. It was as good as garbage not doing anything for 24 years. With it's new lease on life, "I hold the lease", it's destiny is yet to be written. One thing is for sure... it already looks much different than when I got it.

Mojo has a tolex they call seafoam green, its surf green if I ever saw it.

They might not be able to call it S/G

I do believe Arjay is correct in that over the years I have been able to see myself as a caretaker of gear and not an owner, not trying to be morbid but ya can't take it with ya.

As for your amp, pictures and soundclips are always welcome !

Pics of the amp I can do. Sound clips? I'm not up to that point yet but with good gear I hope to make strides this year. I'm in the process of carving out a comfortable spot in the basement just for all my gear. Last night I bought a wardrobe cabinet to hold all my guitars and other music related $#!+. I plan to build a set of guitar hangers if the pole is strong enough to handle the load.
