Hookshot that POS into the nearest convenient dumpster and install a GZ34 in its stead. You may need to re-bias as well.

Cool. I did some reading and it does sound like re bias is required. I'm trying to find a tech here that's not too scary to give it the once over. Thanks for the advice!

Yep,and if you don't mind spending some money to get a first class GZ34,see if you can find a Mullard or Amperex,at a decent price, also I've had good luck with GE 5AR4/GZ34 tubes....these will last so much longer than the current made tubes, but there some good ones of those,I just don't have much experience with them.

So I'm looking for GZ 34's online and there's 4 pin and 7 pin versions. There are 8 pins on that SS rectifier currently in the amp. What do I need to look for? There are some Amperex tubes on ebay for 60 70 bucks.

Not sure what you mean Mark. The Amperex GZ34/5AR4 tubes all have 5 pins. I have an Amperex Bugle Boy in the back-up stash. The tube basing for the GZ34/5AR4 is 5DA. Art

Thanks Art. Yeah, I'm probably confused. I don't have the orig tube to look at, just the ss rectifier, which has 8 pins on it. Then I've been online too much!

Hey again y'all! So I bit the bullet and took my amp in to the scary local tech. He did change the "cathode bypass caps," I had him put in JJ's including getting rid of the SS rectifier in favor of a GZ34. So the resulting sound is much improved. I'm really pleased. Thanks to all of you for your input in helping me with my output, as it were.

Next I'm gonna pull the 12AX7 at V1 or V2 when I decide which channel I'm gonna use. He also put a 12AT7 in the power in the power inverter and I read that a 12AX7 sounds better. Any opinions on this will be appreciated! Thanks again!!

Mark...Glad you got your '66 BFSR sounding good. As for the 12AT7 I believe it will help the amp stay cleaner at higher volumes. Maybe someone with more savy will come along and give you a difinitive answer :!:

It's a GT solid-state replacement for the 5AR4/GZ34 rectifier tube. With a built-in resistor to mimic the "sag" of the tube rectifier. Are they are good as a good GZ34? You prolly already know the answer to that question. Just by looking at the $$$ of good used GZ34 on EBay. Nothing gives a guitar amp the life as a good tube rectifier. It's where all the PS characteristics of the amp begin (along with the PT).

I have a SFSR. The tone is quite unique to all the other Fender amps of its era (and any era, for that matter). Stout bass, yet good "breathing" quality --- that is really amendable to the rhythm of your playing. At lot of that is from the 5AR4/GZ34. As I have a BFPR that takes GZ34 (AA764) and it has a totally difference tone than those that use 5U4GB tubes. Stouter tone, better reverb and tremolo/vibrato. Still a tad of sag (but, not like the 5U4GB, which has a lot of sag).

A simple resistor can't trully mimic the inherent internal resistance of a tube. Ppl have been trying that trick for ages, now. Good that they left the socket intact in your amp. I'd search for a good used 5AR4/GZ34 & see/hear the difference for yourself.

Mark, I prefer a NOS GE 12AT7 with the halo getter(balanced triodes). Now, consider that I don't have a Super Reverb(mid 60 Band Master& Bassman). A 12AX7 is fine for a little extra gain, but the 12AT7 has more current capability. Since this is a driver stage, the AT7 is my choice. A good one can last you 20 years. JMO Art

Art, I'm not a big fan of most 12AT7's. They are ok and definitely will change the tone and response if subb'ed into the input section of that SR. If a bit lower gain and cleaner top end is what you are after, may want to consider a good 5751. A good one still has the tonal range of a good 12AX7, but less overall gain.

The 1970-80's Sylvania/Philips JAN 5751 is a good choice, IMHO. My favorite is the Holy Raytheon triple-mica, black plate/windmill getter 5751.

Just one site for a range of years made and styles of 5751:
