Hey y'all! I'm sure this has been covered to death but please indulge. Have had this black face 66 super for about 20 years and seem to having a real mid range honk that I can't seem to get around. I haven't played it a lot- not sure how many hours- and I think I had it re-tubed when I first got it- not positive. It does have the AB763 circuit. So I know I probably need new tubes but I'm wondering how it specifically will improve the tone. I've heard guys say they can tell it's time for tubes by the sound but I'm not sure what that means exactly. Thanks for your kind guidance!

MR...If you have had it for 20 years it is more than overdue for a cap job. Take it to a good amp tech and have them change out what needs to be changed...but only what must be changed.

Also, we like pics so post a couple of that beauty!

Thanks stratman. Only one amp tech around here. He keeps stuff for six months, charges too much, and does a crappy job... Have a pic for you, don't see how to post it here...

You have to upload your photos to a remote-hosting service such as Photobucket. Then merely cut-and-paste the appropriate hyper-link for each pic (use the "img CODE" format on this forum) into the text body of your post.

So easy even a Image can do it.

Yep, figured it out! I'm not responsible for the rip in the cloth or the beer stains running down it! Gives it character I suppose!

Nice 66! I am a big fan of SR's, here is my 65...

and my 72...

Great highs and tight lows out of both and a superb reverb as well. If you are getting a ton of mids, definately sounds like a cap job is in order...good amp techs are hard to find...I just lost mine and am back in the hunt for another one.

Hey! Where the heck did that Retro guy get my picture?(I meant to smile) Mark. tubes wear out at different rates. If your amp has RCA power tubes, that are still matched, I wouldn't touch them. If the small tube next to them is either a RCA or GE I'd leave that alone. The large tube, all the way to the left(as viewed from the rear of the amp), if RCA or USA made is fine( if made in GB it's more than fine). The smaller pre amp tubes tend to wear out sooner. The degradation, is usually so slow that it's hard to notice. We just turn up the tone and volume controls to adapt. A total retube in that pre amp would not be my choice, but rather a good cleaning of the amp sockets, jacks, controls. JMO, Art

that's what we call "mojo" around here, nice amp! it's hard to beat the BFSR. :D
1966 was a great year for Fender BF amps even though CBS was in power,we've noticed that several of us have '66 amps of different models and they are all tone monsters...those last few years of Leo's designs...'65-early'68 are classics.

+1

This amp needs a thorough bench-check and inspection before playing it in any serious manner -- don't let hillock-sized issues become an Everest-sized emergency. The lack of any sonic "fattitude" may be tube-related but it could also be shittyass speakers or speakers wired out-of-phase with one another. A visual examination is warranted IMO. Once the chassis has been cleared for operation, then the cosmetic shortcomings can be addressed.

So in looking at the tubes, it has a solid state rectifier. What's that doing for me- or to me!?

:!: :?: :!: :?: :!:

Is the amp equipped with a Weber Copper Cap in the V9 tube socket or has someone defiled the chassis by soldering some diodes in lieu of a GZ34?

Either way, the characteristic power-supply "sag" which gives these amps so much of their voice when pushed hard is gone.
