I know from looking at the Fender Field Guide the circuits are different; I love my Bandmaster and Showman, but looking for a little more "give" from a rectified 40 watter. I know the blonde came in both 1x10 and 2x10 cabs.

For those that own or have played both, what would you say is the tonal differences between the two, both straight on, as well as the tremolo?

And to make it more fun, how would you compare the closed cab Tremolux to similar vintage Pro Reverbs (minus the reverb of course on the blackface).

Thanks.

Hey Ned,all of my amps are combos, the '66 Pro Reverb I have is a full sounding multi directional amp with the 2x12s...I would think that the closed back cab you're talking about would be more direct than the open backed combo....as far as the "give" you mentioned,I'm not sure what you mean,is it the sag you get from the rectifier on the 40 watts?
The Pro gets really loud for 40 watts and it fills out a room nicely....I have to say though, that given the same room I'll prefer my Vibrolux Reverb with 2x10s and rated at 35 watts,I can get those 10s singing at around 5 or 6 on the volume and the amp starts to get a little crunch without splitting your head....the more I play through it the more attached I become to it,I've only been using it for a couple of months now and it's been my number one amp...so far.

Either Tremolux is rated for about 35 watts (the B+ is only 410VDC -- about the same as a 6V6-fired Deluxe Reverb). The 6G9 circuit employs a bias-modulated trem a la the Vibro Champ and Princeton while the AA763/AB763 uses the traditional opto-isolator device. The single-speaker 6G9 was designed around a tone-ring enclosure, similar to the Showman -- allegedly there was also a 1 x 12 Tremolux for a brief period before Leo updated the model with twin tens in a bass-reflex cab. Sonically, the 6G9 sounds more "brown" than the less rare blackface variant though it lacks the NFB loop and presence control of the more powerful brownfaces. The blackface version yields the tone we're all familiar with -- scooped mids with well-defined bass and treble. Both are great amps worthy of stage-play and/or a vintage collection.

Thanks Arjay. Will be nice to also get a 2x10 cab as well. There was a blonde at our local Sam Ash (there for something else) but it had been modded, non-stock 2x12 open cab, and way too much money.

The hunt begins..

+1

I got a cupcake here in town with a '65 Tremolux who's been trying to sell it to me for over two years now. $1500!

Cosmetically, it's a trainwreck and includes an equally-hosed Silvertone Twin Twelve cab with a pair of pretty decent vintage C12Q's. If he ever sobered up I'd write him a check for a grand in a heartbeat. But his double-wide needs roof work and the septic tank needs pumping out.

Oh well......

Ha! And of course, with the other Fenders in the stable, I can afford to wait -- hoping to find another drummer with a "modded" tremolux that I can take off his hands for cheap...
