I'm Chris the local apprentice / new at restoring and repairing tube amps.
You can learn volumes from the guys here (I have).
Did my first Cap job on a 67 Bassman and several other small repairs all with help from
several of the regulars here, it turned out very well !!!

I'm a Bail Agent in northern Indiana and so I hang out in four pawn shops in my county several times a week, I lurk on Craigs list too, I buy up every piece of gear I can get at extreme bottom feeder prices, nearly all of it needs repaired.

Thats what I do when not talking amps with these guy

My only gigs these days are coffee shops and blues jams and that is just fine with me !!!
Oh and i teach a handful of middle aged wannabees and sometimes their kids how to play some blues.

Nice to meet ya
Chris

Hi Chris,

I'm not really an arrogant $@!&#. I just play one on forums. :P

Born in MS in 1960. Spent my teen years in Houston, TX. Now trying to make a living in Tempe, AZ

After 4 alcohol related arrest, getting kicked out of sub school in the Navy, and generally being lucky to be alive I quit drinking. That was 25+ years ago. So alcohol is no excuse for my behavior.

I know how to design and build a decent tube amp but I'm crap when it comes to troubleshooting problems. I'll probe all day trying to figure out why the output is so low and someone like Arjay can walk by and say, "Why don't you just change out that burnt resistor?".

I'm a so-so guitar player. When folks ask me if I play guitar I say, "No, I play with a guitar". Here's a video of me butchering "Little Martha".

Very cool.
I did some open tuning playing a few times at a coffee house open blues jam, when i thought I was gonna be a slide guy.
Never got "the touch" with slide.

Did the drinking along with other assorted self medications and then found peace and never looked back.

I offered Uncle Sam 20 years of my life and was heading off to train as a boiler Tech trainer (TAR program) and one tiny emergency surgery later and good old Uncle Sam said Go home boy, kinda sent my life spinning looking for a direction, still don't know what I want to be when i grow up.

P.S. I'll be 46 tomorrow :)

I bought a Regal dobro type guitar with the intent of learning slide. It sounded like I was playing with a catchers mitt on while dragging the guitar against a piece of angle iron. That thing was sold off is fairly short order - much to the relief of my family.

Happy Birthday

The wife got me a gross of Xtra Heavy picks and the Weber "Tube Amp Talk" book

I got myself a pair of the USA made Carvin british 12" 8 ohms for my traynor cab, i built a new baffle for it today restreched the grill cloth and now she is awaiting the new speakers.

That gives me two strong 2x12 cabs for my 60's fender heads.

Thanks for the good B-day wishes, i hope to do a lot of nothing ! supposed to be 71 and sunny

I recommend the Avatar traditional G212......

http://www.avatarspeakers.com/

Fender-esque cosmetics, durable construction, and reasonably priced.

I was lucky enough to find two used cabs

a 70's Fender 2x15 (Huge)
and a Vintage Traynor 2x15 40% smaller

Both have new 2x12 baffles

Both are big compared to todays cabs, the Traynor is much more manageable and fits in a trunk, the fender requiers a van.

If I were gigging, I would load up my old peavey classic series 2x12 cab out in the garage and use it, its about half the size of the traynor and the chassis is long gone so it weighs next to nothing.
In fact I'll most likely start looking for a decent pair of 12's just for that purpose.

Upon further review you are correct. Teemuk does seem to contradict himself. Also looking at my comments I clearly implied that all devices, tube or SS, have similar characteristics when over driven. I knew better than that and need to be more careful when going off. I humbly stand corrected.

However, Teemuk does show that the 5F6 Bassman, and at least one other amp, does clip rather abruptly. That wave form from a pure tube 6L6 circuit is clearly not what I would expect based on conventional wisdom. There doesn't appear to be much compression at all before the onset of hard clipping.

I've only done this type of test myself with opamps and they literally look like they were clipped with a new pair of scissors. Much harder than the Bassman. But the Univox amp clearly gets close to that - but who cares about Univox anyway.

I've seen weird behavior from BJTs where they inverted the over driven portion of the signal. But the inversion comes on almost immediately - no compression or gentle transition. I've NEVER seen compression from a stand alone SS device - although there are tons of devices out there so it could be possible. However, if I made such an implication, which I think I did, then I again humbly stand corrected and will now go spank myself.

Teemuck barely scratches the surface of why the 5F6A Bassman sounds the way it does. To really understand, you need to read the book I referenced earlier by Richard Kuehnel. I've read it several times and am still trying to digest all the math. To think that 36+ years ago I ate math like what is in that book for breakfast.

I purchased and read the book after building my Weber 5F6A Bassman clone (viewtopic.php?f=13&t=65668) because I wanted a better understanding of the amp.

No doubt that a few wave forms don't tell much.

I suppose I've beat the horse enough times to kill a herd.

Take care,
