The old Sunn amps with CMOS sound pretty darned good for a solid-state amp, both clean and distorted. Maybe the Jazz Chorus would be another contender, but most solid-state amps are definitely lacking somewhat when compared to tube amps.

There have also been some crappy tube amps. I had a Kent amp that I bought off ebay about ten years ago. It had been manufactured in the 60's and it was junk. The cabinet was particle board, there was no transformer in the power supply (I'm not joking) which made it a death trap, it had a plastic handle that rattled as you played, and it had the crappiest 6in speaker I've ever owned in an amp. A Fender Mustang I is a better amp by far. But who in their right mind would compare those two amps and declare universally that solid state is better than tube?

+1

I remember some of those inexpensive student amps from Alamo, Harmony, Kay, etc back in the early '60s, with their MDF cabinets and masonite speaker baffles. Junk? You bet. And as you mentioned, some of it dangerous junk at worst!

We've come a long way since then.

I still stand by my earlier comments

And again when put in the same room at the same time using an A/B switching system the sound difference is obvious between the best of SS amps and the best of tubes amps.

The tube circuit has a more pleasing sound every time.

Our memory of sound is the weakest of any of our abilities to remember, that is why any attempt to compare without side by side testing is a total waste of time.

I don't doubt your integrity or honesty for a second. I apologize if I implied otherwise.

Well, I guess there are Line-6 guys (with their programmable PODs). And old Fender amp guys with their 12AX7s and 6L6GCs. Funny thing, we sit around talking about same stuff --- getting this guy's or that guy's tone on stage or on a recording.

Ironic still is "that guy's tone" usually didn't come from some modeling piece of trash.

Wonder why that is......?

Arjay, in my (and only my) opinion, those bottles have magic in them. Like a tone Genie waiting for a proper axe master to let him out. He just can't fit into solid-state chips. Even in playback. Old vinyl with tube driven recordings are still the best.

Ok, there are a few more knuckleheads that also think that way.

Magic = 12AX7 -> 6L6GCs, power by GZ34 or 5U4GB. Easy, isn't it?

You may count me among your disciples, Effendi!

Silicone just doesn't pack the requisite "magic smoke" like the mystical bottles of yore.

I suspect most of the magic is in the fingers, not the circuitry.

Beemer...That's the formula :!: :!: I knew there was a mathmatical reason Tubes were better than SS, thanks for the enlightenment
