I keep reading on here about the Mustang solid state computer amps, and I spotted a brand new one with the tag still on it. It looks brand new and they were asking $70 for it at GC. I got it and will be able to pick up this piece of used gear on 4-9-12. I got 30 days to bring it back if I don't like it. It is a Mustang I. I think they sound kind of cool for solid state. This would be my second tranny amp. I've also played other nice tranny amps made these days by Fender as well as Marshall. This seems to be a good travel knock around amp. Any comments or opinions from you kind folks would be welcomed!

Strike one! Jacstrat steps out of the batters' box after a ninety mile an hour pitch comes close to his left shoulder. Jac's having a few close ones today!

Always keep this simple equation in mind when considering an amp purchase......

(TU +TX) ALN = TO

Where "TU" denotes tubes, "TX" denotes tolex, "ALN" denotes alnico, and "TO" denotes tone.

These are the only values that allow this formula to work.

You probably aren't feeling the love. :D

I haven't played through a Mustang to offer any direct comments about those particular amps. but I have owned a couple of modeling amps. I owned a couple of Vox Valvetronics and a Fender Vibro Champ XD. The amps were okay. We actually got the best tone from the Vox's when we put a Boss '59 Bassman pedal in front of it. :? The Vibro was okay.... but it still didn't match the vintage amps I owned. Even the little used 600 Champion reissue I bought is a better amp than the modeling amps I have owned.

Obviously - a lot of other forum members feel the same as I do. Meaning? Well you just aren't going get a lot of positive comments from the Vintage Amp Fourm. :D You might try posting in the other forums.

For $70 - its probably worth the risk to play around with it and see if you like it or not. The ability to plug into the computer and tweak your tone is probably interesting.

I understand the reasoning for Fender developing these technology-based amps. If Fender isn't trying to expand their market, then they won't be a viable company in the future. Computer technology is everywhere. Its not like the vintage amp guys are running around with WW II radio sets instead of the latest smart phone.

All I can add to this is one fact.

Every pawn shop in my area ( I visit four regularly) have These amps on their sales floors right now.

That should tell you something.

They are toys for kids to play with , The champion 600 is on a blow out sale from AMS
for 119.99 you get a barnd new Tube amp, that with a little modding sounds great.

Fishing lures are not built to catch fish, they are built to catch fisherman !
Build your tone from a solid basic tube amp and add effects as needed (pedals).
Remember less is better !

They are all over Craigslist also. I found it to be telling that less than a month after they were introduced they started popping up on CL. :?

Talking about modeling amps and computer-based amps on this forum is like bring a Prius to a vintage car cruise-in.

You guys are the goods! Thank you! I'm also into tube tone tenacity. I have 5 tube amps and one tranny (Sunn alpha 112r). I dig tube but I have had much fun with solid state as well. For $70 bucks it is just a kick around amp. I got 30 days to take it back if I feel it is true Kahkah. I know many of you are saying already, "take it back." I'll check it out and perhaps share if it is a positive experience, and not just a bad solid state acid trip. By the way, I spotted that Chinese champ for 119.99 in AMS. I got it next to me right now, the issue with the God of Youth guitar, Mr. Cobain, on the cover of the not so Rolling Stone. I dig Nirvana, but I believe Foo Fighters has somewhat passed them up. Cobain is like the Jimi Hendrix of this generation to many. I'll stick with Jimi and SRV as far as guitar operators.

Eric, Jimmi, Stevie and one of my all time favorites Albert Collins.

Albert played like he was trying to whip a bad child, take that and that !!!! LOL !!!
Smill'n the whole time :D

For a small low wattage amp that is also fun to tinker with, i found my China made VHT special 6 sounds amazing with the right tubes, thats all I've done so far, I hear there is a mod to tighten up the bass a bit, right now it reminds me of a few 5E3's I've owned.
I also have some nice Alnico 12's in two seperate cabs that help a bit !

That is one bad $@! analog piece of gear there! That one looks mint condition as well. I know it has more heart and balls than any smart phone as well. Also I'm glad to see someone posted something about VHT amps! I was impressed by the ones I checked out at NAMM about over a year ago.
