I found this '68 drip-edge DR around Christmas, the seller was finally ready to make a deal so I grabbed it recently… it's all original except for the "upgrade".

As you can see from the pics it needed some TLC, the previous owner added this mod that turns this amp into something it ain’t! Dropped it off at my amp tech, he removed the mod, replaced filter caps (original), new cord and it was ready to go.

But something had to be done with the back panel... Arjay to the rescue! I’ll let the pics do the talking :)

And after

To match the tolex as close as possible Arjay used some he saved from a '65 Showman cab, just to make sure the amp has extra mojo! :D He also sent me a replacement Showman knob to replace the damaged one. Thanks again Arjay!!!!

And here she is with her younger sister

And with her even younger sister :)

One can never have enough Deluxe Reverbs around...

Not to mention all the excellent advice he and a few others here has offered up in times of need !

Another fine contributor here helped me find some needed tubes on a 5E3 tweed i was trying to get close to original tone from.

This is a great group of guys !!!

Very nice fix-it. BTW... you running those metal can RCA 6L6? I used TS 6L6 cans on a Gibson amp awhile back. Give the amp a more "chimey" Ampeg like tone. IMHO. How about yours?

Nice set of amps, there.

Stop wasting time and pick up a nice SFDR :) You can't beat it for the price!

Been playing both... a lot! :) the 75 DR more actually, for now, need some speakers, I've got some Jensens on the way... the Oxford in the '68 sounded horrible so I put the Utah from the other DR in there cause it sounds so sweet, but it's old and tired, starts to buzz at loud volumes. I'm testing an Emi Cannabis Rex ATM in the 75, very nice! Whatever speaker I hook the 75 to it's always warmer sounding than the 68.

Thanks Beemer! The metal can 6V6 were the first thing to go! Replaced with RCA 6V6GTA, didn't feel comfortable running them in a DR and Arjay said they don't belong in there. They were biased very hot, 28mA IIRC. That was before the amp went in to get fixed, haven't tried 'em since. So I can't really comment on how they'd sound cause the amp sounded horrible when I first got it.

I've got a drip edge SFDR that was made in late '67 like Arjay's but not as pristine as his... :D

Reb, I recently determined my SFDR was actually "born" in the second week of '68. Still a blackface at heart (AB763) but a skosh younger than yours. The trannies date to mid-'67 while the reverb tank was made in the 49th week of the same year. The date stamp on the chassis itself reads "0268".

Mine is stamped with "4967", everything is either 66 or 67 in there... PT and OT are 66, RT is 67 and so is the Oxford speaker.

Arjay got very lucky with his, looks new!!!

Sounds like our three amps may be very close cousins -- within a couple of months or so.

Patience, weed-hoppah!

My '78 chassis arrived this evening. I'll be unpacking it later and installing it into its cab tomorrow.

In the meantime, here's my two silverfaces......

Image

Both of them JBL-equipped, as will be the third amp in my diabolical triumvirate.
