6V6 original Radiotron (RCA) nomenclature. AFAIK.

6V6 = metal tube 10 watts max

6V6G = ST-coke bottle 12 watts max

6V6GT = GT sized glass enclosure 12 watts

6V6GTY = mil spec brown micanol based (primo tube) 12-14 watt max

6V6GTA = slow-warm up. 14 watts.

HTH :mrgreen:

Now, all the newer nomenclature like 6V6S and 6V6HD are post US made period and are company specific.

My RCA tube manual (RC30) list the 6V6 metal can type and the 6V6GTA both as 14 watt tubes (max design values). The 6V6GT and 6V6GTY are in the same section, no mention of any with less than 14 watt rating. The manual says that both types (metal and glass) are equivalent in performance to 6AQ5A (smaller tube type). And in all of the above examples, to be more specific, the letter "G" stands for glass. :idea:

Edit:
Interesting, I checked the same RC30 manual listing for the smaller 6AQ5A mentioned above, and it lists as a 12 watt tube. Also, checking older manuals randomly, the first one that I checked (RC15) shows the 6V6 and 6V6GT as 12 watt tubes under the "Design Maximum", in the same place that the RC30 lists 14 watts, yet the RC15 still shows 14 watts for push-pull operation below the max values, same as the RC30 manual. I am going to check some more RCA manuals, but so far 12 watts is the lowest max rating for any 6V6 listed (not counting triode connected). Maybe RCA decided to increase the 6V6 rating at some point?

Shimmy, From looking at the data sheets, RCA just updated their 6V6G to 6V6GT... changing mostly dimensions of the the tube (at least the international Radiotron data). And GE's data sheet seems to rate their 6V6GT a bit higher than the RCA's more-or-less. With their GTA only having different warmup characteristics.

But, then compare the GE and RCA data to the original Tungsol 6V6GT. Needless to say, manufacturers tended to really underate their tube's capabilities in those days.

Which worked to Fender's favor at the dawning of the blackface era since Leo began to really push those tubes.

Exactly....the BFDR pushes them past their listed max....or what is supposed to be the max.

This is why I asked you guys if the 5V4GT and 5V4GA were comparable. It seems like the letter codes can indicate something cosmetic, like a differently shaped glass envelope, but they can also indicate more pronounced electrical differences. I just wanted to make sure before I put the rectifier in the amp. I really appreciate everyone's expertise!

And still no specifics as to the difference. :cry:

Again, why not ask Mark exactly what the difference is between the two. No dancing around the question, simply; "Mark, what exactly is the difference between the 5V4GA and 5V4GT?". You keep managing to avoid the direct question, to him at least. :wink: :lol:
