I picked up one of those 70's Fender Bassman 50 cabs with the diagonally set 2x15 speakers for $50 as fixer-upper project. It's missing the entire speaker grille (which looks like it just velcro'd in?).

So I had a couple of questions for the restoration.

I'm assuming the grille assembly was made of plywood. Anyone know what thickness? Was the grille assembly actually velcro'd in?

What speakers came in the cab? The speakers I have do not have any labels, markings or serial numbers. Makes me think a little that they're not the originals. But they certainly don't look like new speakers. I will post a picture of them later if that helps.

The grill frame was indeed velcroed to the baffle board with strips in each corner, midway between them at the edges, and two or three strips positioned diagonally in the opposite direction from the speakers. The frame was 1/2" plywood, with the cloth stapled to it in the conventional manner. A triangular wedge in the upper-left corner of the frame served as a shelf to mount the logo to. The cloth weave featured the rust/orange vertical stripe common to most Fender amps of the mid-70's era. Period-correct 15-inch speakers for this enclosure could've been made by Eminence or CTS and were usually of the alnico variety. The JBL D140F also remained an option.

I appreciate the info. Looking at pictures online I noticed that triangular wedge. Should be a relatively easy job to make a new one. Just have to source the cloth and logo.

The speakers are definitely not D140F's. I will post some pics later this evening.
