My order is going in as soon as i know the values of the five resistors.

Then again Radio shack most likely can cover that, Right ?

In case you missed my very first ever sound clip, here it is again

http://www.box.com/s/713jui0n7lqyfi5h5bvm

Don't laugh its just a really fast attempt, sounds kinda thin to me, not here at studio BB, but on the little desk top speakers.

Yeah Blues the Sprague 500's are fine, that's what I use in my Bassman, and the wall voltage can get up as high as 127vac. The 10uf-500 is fine for the last cap. I would try to find a 50uf-100 for the bias board. Beemer has pointed out the time-constant character at this place in the circuit, and I totally agree. As far as the resistors go, it would depend on your local Radio Shack, otherwise a professional electronic store will have them. That instructional link is very nice. And nice pickin' ! Art

Thanks !

My order is placed and shipped from AES

I'll be posting with pictures as I go.

I went with the srague atom caps, I'll pull out my resistor codes and get them locally.

one more little sound clip (man this is fun !!!)

Seems you got the direction you want to go in and I won't pollute the waters with more advice because it's all good...but I want to comment on the tone,it is really sweet and I understand your reluctance to make any changes, but I think you will like it even more when you're done.
Ain't these old amps great!!

I thought my Clark Piedmont was the ultimate in tone, and it was amazing !

This is better.

I do want to do the real bias mod after I get the caps changed, any of you guys done one ?

Yeah I've done a handful or more. Mostly Twins, but also my 165. Think it's a subject for another thread,Blues. I'd get those caps in and let the amp stabilize. See how close you can get the power tubes to match and enjoy the amp for awhile. Just my opinion, man! Art

Gotcha !

I can't wait to get this done !!!

Then the first 65 degree day I''l roll everything out to the garage and make enemies throughout the neighborhood

Is there somwhere where I can find the value of my resistors ? i can't read the schematics I found online.

Chris

Yeah Chris, let me get my glasses. For the power supply: (2) 220K 2watt, (1) 1K 2watt, (1) 4.7K 2watt,(1) 27K 2watt. And for the bias board: (1) 470 1watt or 2watt. These can all be metal oxide flame-proof resistors. My local Radio Shack kind of lost it's component attention, so I get my stuff on line or drive 35 miles to a pro-shop. Oh Yeah, the power tube screen resistors are also the 470ohm 1 or 2watt, you'll probably get 5 in a pack. So there you go. If you have any more questions call Arjay, collect ! Just jivin', we'll be around. Art

LMFAO!

+1 on all doghouse, bias board, and screen resistors -- both the value(s) and composition. Carbon-comp resistors may be great for their vintage visual vibe within a chassis but metal-film or metal-oxide types deliver superior drift-free performance over a longer period of time.

Rawk on!

I still have some 470 ohm from when (ARJAY) helped me get a TRRI back on its feet.

This wouldn't be half as much fun without you guys !!!!

I keep finding these pawn shop and craigs list deals, there is allways someting wrong with them, mentioning the problem here usually gets the info i need to get them back in order.

Sure wish i could find a local retired TV/Radio guy to hang with and try and learn the craft.

Serious Thanks to all of you guys !!!

I got my 12 watt 150 ohm wire wound resistor yesterday, I'm ready to drain some caps !

And so it begins

I found the polarity of each cap and yes one is flipped.

My meter when set to DC volts shows 0 at each cap am I doing something wrong or did they discharge by themselves ?

Neg meter lead to chassis, pos meter lead to + on cap. You're probably checking them correctly, but at least the one bad one won't hold a charge because it just might be open. They could discharge normally, but having no charge whatsoever could be an indicator that they are just bad caps.

Never would have guessed 2 watt metal oxide resistors would be so hard to find locally !

Got them coming from Arizona (my old home state), they are pretty fast.

Even those 100uf are a bit longer than the original 70uf's I'm replacing, cutting it close on length.

Ah Yes, sunny Arizona. I have hot-sweaty memories of Buckeye, the"garden spot" of the Southwest ! Actually, I had a good time there. Good Luck with the amp, Chris ! Art
