Absolutely no doubt, all you have to do is read through the forums that cover the various manufactures to see that quality is WAY !!!! down.

And the simple fact is, a guy with simple electrical knowledge who is careful can rebuild the turret board stuff, printed boards are much harder to get right and not cause more harm than good.

I felt like my 68 Bandmaster Reverb SF was a bargain at 400 bucks ! Awesome reverb, sweet tone and built to outlast me for sure.

I would have to say I can really only recomend Vintage amps right now.

I agree, vintage amps are all we gig with,it's just like that old car with points and plugs, with a little shadetree mechanic ability, you can keep them going.
These old amps, wired as they are solid in every way, replacable components...Leo's practical way of building them with the repairman in mind makes them a reliable tool to play music without worrying too much about them dying on you.

Absolutely, Reb!

You can liken this to the proverbial hunt for babes while cruising your favorite strip on a Friday night.

Is that statueseque 36D blonde in the hotpants and 5-inch stilettos likely to jump into a widget-laden Hundai Accent or would she prefer the pulsating rumble of a '69 Z28?

The prosecution rests.

Still a little scratchyness in the bassman head
Chopsticks point to wires from V-3 when plucked sound comes from the amp not unlike a guitar string would ??? Microphonic leads ???
I tried several 12AX7's and 5751's with no change.
The other picture is a very small resistor under the leads
color code brown, black yellow silver or 1K ?
It looks a little burnt on one end, possible that it is the slight crackle I hear ?

That's 100K ohms. Maybe a Plate resistor?

The carbon comp resistors can be the source of noise, static or crackling sounds.

About the only place that the carbon comps possibly contribute to sound quality is the Plate resistors for for preamp and PI tubes. All others should be replaced with metal film. When changing the carbon comps on the Plates with metal film types, I only noticed less noise, no difference in sound for me. Any sound differences between the two types would have to be at high volume, and I couldn't swear that there is much difference at all even then, so I go with the better metal film type, flameproof at that.

Can I remove solder and pull it out or will i need to pull the board to get at any under wiring ?
And yes I saw that it was 100K , i checked several others that were the same value and they were all very close to 100k the one i pointed to was 129K on my meter

When i poked at it with my chopstick a bit crumbled from the end too.

Thanks !!!!!!

Chris

Yep, that might be at least part of your problem, definitely a bad resistor. Looking at the layout, it looks like you can replace it from the top without removing the board. You might have to change your screen name to Blues Techman if you keep this up. :)

That does look like the Plate resistor for half of V3 (pin 1), is that right?

pin 1 from v-3 does connect to one side of that resistor

Now to go find a proper resistor

Hey its a rainy cold day here any way !
