In your weekend EBAY, CL journeys two little known good 12AX7-type, plug-&-play tubes to look for are the Westinghouse 12DF7 and the Raytheon 12DT7. A short description from Net: " These are special low noise and low microphonic versions of the 12AX7. Most are either Westinghouse (12DF7) or Raytheon 12DT7, 12DM7). "

I was able to get a sleeve of five NOS/NIB 12DT7 for $125. So there still are good buys out there. Even good testing used DF, DT, and DM's are nice tubes. Esp the black plates.

Good hunting!

Thanks for sharing BMW! I really need to find me some decent 12AX7 tubes, only have a few that I really really like and whatever else I try don't do the job... I've tried many different tubes, so if I find any of those I'll give 'em a try.

Those are prolly Hungarain made Tungsram ECC83. The 1970-80's version are VERY GOOD TUBES. They usually have a characteristic number tag on the upper anode plate or getter structure. See the "58" on the right tube's getter support?

Tungsram are great tubes. Esp in amp which are a little anemic. Very powerful bass. Clear high note. Ok midrange. Not your Bluesy 12AY7 tone. Very aggressive. Yet, clean.

Blues, yup it's a Tungsram. Gather these puppies up, while you can. The Tungsram ECC83/12AX7 and their EL84 are two of the best tubes ever made.
