Hi im currently looking for a Fender Blackface head to purchase and i've been looking at 4 different models, some are from the Blackface era and some aren't. The list is the following:

-1967 or 1968 Fender Blackface Dual Showman head
-1970 or 1971 Fender Dual Showman Reverb head
-1965 Fender Blackface Showman head
-1965 Blackface Fender Tremolux head

I play mostly classic rock with a bit of overdrive but nothing too heavy. Basically id like to know which of these models has the best clean tone, headroom, and of course which is the more versatile or best head out of the list that I provided. Id also like to note that I would not be using the head for gigs, it would be used mostly to jam with friends. I already have some effects like distortion, overdrive, compressor, wah pedal, delay, & fuzz. I also have a mesa rectifier 2x12 cab loaded with vintage 30 speakers to go along with the head that id like to buy eventually. My cab can be played on 8 ohms mono or 16 ohms stereo if that helps. Ive also heard that the AB763 circuit is better than the AA763 but then again im fairly new in this whole subject and I could definitely use some help because Ive never played any of the models that I listed so the more information/help I get the better. If there are any other fender Blackface era heads that im missing or suggestions please let me know, thanks.

Interesting range of amps. My little work with Showman head units, is that they are loud. Depending on the cab selection and speakers... VERY loud.

Your inclusion of the BF Tremolux head is interesting. This amp runs only two 6L6GC. Plenty loud enough with good cab and speakers for gigging. But not the arena type volume of a Dual Showman loaded with JBL or Altec speakers.

Guess it may help to refine where you are going to used the amp? And if you are going to lug 100+ lbs of equipment from gig to gig.

Thanks!

Hi thanks for the reply, im definitely not gonna be using the equipment to do any gigs and if I were to do it in the future it would be for small gigs definitely. Ive narrowed down the list and right now im trying to decide which head to get between the 1967/68 blackface dual showman, the 1965 blackface showman, or the 1965 blackface tremolux. Do you have any experience with these models? thanks.

That Showman or Dual Showman head unit sitting on top of a healthy sized cab may become a permanent fixture in your house. Perhaps not great WAF. We are talking heavy (no not your wife!).

The BF Tremolux maybe a nice ticket. You can run it at 36-40 watt with 6L6GC. Or 30-32 watts with TungSol 5881/6L6WGB. In other words, with a good cab and efficient speakers, you STILL have the potential to be the loudest thing on your block (near "dimed" out). Maybe, just a little quieter than the guy in his lowered steed at the stop light. The one with the 10,000 watt subwoofer in his car. But, you'll have more flexibility without relying on stomp boxes and processors to get OD in amps like Showman, which may not OD until they "crunch."

Pup, guitar controls, touch control, dialing in amp settings can all give you a good dynamic range of music much easier, at this power range. IMHO

With the Showman... We enter the realm of Twin Reverb country. A TR driving efficient cabs. Even louder. Gigging with your friends will may progress in three ways. Gig #1... you are at "2" everyone else is squeezing the beejers out of their units, for every last drop of juice. Gig #2... You are now 15 feet behind everyone else. Still too loud. Gig #3. Your friends show up with an Ampeg SVT, Hiwatt, Orange, Sunn Stacks. Your new groups name? "Tinnitus."

"I got a feeling, a feeling deep inside..." the Tremolux head maybe the way to go for your needs. "Oh yeah!"
