On EBay now. Check the BIN! Crazy. Love that marque: "AMPLIFIER for TELE & STRAT!!" Hey. I've even played a Gibson through a Princeton.

Beemer, you've got to be the main Princeton guy around here! Been watching the Bay and Craigs, but, man, do they command the top bucks! Might have to settle for an Ampeg or Ceritone. Art

You can still find bargain-priced silverface Princeton's and Princeton Reverb's, Art.

Arjay, what would you consider the reasonable years to be considered? Don't know how these amps might have changed through the years. Art

Well of course the blackface amps are the "holy grail" according to contemporary lore. But I've heard silverfaces sound just as tasty. The late 78's, the 79's, and the 80's (with the pull-boost feature) are perhaps the least desirable models but in all honesty, if you merely ignore it, the amps still sound pretty much like any other Princeton Reverb. In all cases, speaker selection is paramount to good tone. The mid '60s models often used the Jensen C10R which IMO was the best stock speaker of the bunch. In late '66 FMI threw Jensen under the bus and began sourcing their low-power 10's from Oxford (a big mistake, sonically). The Oxford 10J4 remained the OEM speaker all the way to the end of the amp's production in 1980 although periodic examples of a CTS (both ceramic and alnico) have been documented during the silverface era. Personally, I like the CTS alnico ten -- it's the same speaker used in the Super Reverb. Mercifully, CBS didn't tamper too much with the "student model" amps during their years of stewardship over Fender so the Princetons and Princeton Reverbs continued to sell well. The one undeniable "improvement" they made was to equip the amp with a grounded 3-conductor power cable and matching AC convenience outlet, beginning in the mid '70s.

Outta my stash of PR's, the AB764 (1964) has the sweetest tone. Best reverb and vibrato. Running Raytheon 12AX7. Brimar CV4024 (12AT7). And BP, gray glass Magnavox 6V6GT (very nice tubes, usually at good price). But, you know.... I think that GZ34 really seems to make a difference in this amp versus a brand new GE 5U4GB.

Going to try this mod and a tone stack change, this weekend on a customer's AA1164. See how it flies.

Thanks you guys! The Princeton just seems to be the neatest mid powered amp. The Deluxe is cool, but the Princeton's circuit really gets my attention. Thanks again, Art

The neatest Princeton Reverbs I ever saw were a matched Mesa-modded pair of drip-edge silverfaces that Elvin Bishop played at a small venue in South Lake Tahoe back in '75. Both were fired via a pair of 5881's and used Vibrolux Reverb iron wired to a JBL D120F. They were absolute screamers.

Is this true for all Vintage Fender amps or just certain models? Not to hijack this thread but is there a source I can check out? Maybe the book of "Amp Lore," or even better a book of "Guitar Equipment Lore"? Covering amps and sought after pedals.

Every genre of Fender amp has its own following of aficionados. Some tweed guys swear by the 5E3 and the 5F6. For many in the brownface faction, it's the 6G4 or the 6G16. A lot of blackface fans idolize the Super Reverb and the Vibrolux Reverb. The silverfaces are generally regarded as "red-headed step children" although -- functionally -- the early drip-edge versions are identical to their blackface bretheren.

Me?

I like 'em all.

I like all of them too!...but I have favorites in every generation, for tweeds,I really like the Tremolux,in the brown era The Super and the Vibrolux, and in the blackface period, the Vibrolux Reverb has become my favorite with the Deluxe Reverb a very close second.

DJ, that's hard to say about the books. These amps are essentially personal pieces of equipment, once you take it into your playing sphere. Tweaking the amp to your particular tastes is really the bottom line. Print can help direct you. But time and effort will turn an appliance into an instrument. JMHO Art
