Hey guys. Just got a Victoria 5E3 clone. Figured it was okay to post about it here. Its my first tweed and I really like it. Its just a hot nasty little amp.

Anyway you guys always have good info here so I thought I would just see what you all know about the circuit, what you like or dislike, etc.

The guy I traded with said something about adjusting the volume of the channel you're not plugged into doing something to the gain of the channel you are plugged into (decreasing it maybe). Anyone here know about this? Anyone here have opinions on what settings sound pleasing? Mostly I play an american deluxe strat and an SG.

Also, it has a 12ax7 in v1. I don't have a 12ay7 right now, but have a NOS one on the way. It really drives right now, and from what I read on other forums it will be a little tamer with the AY in it. Also, any opinions on good NOS 6V6's?

Thanks for any info!

Yeah s3, we're open to all amp concerns on this board, as far as I know. The 5E3 has interactive channels. The tone and volume controls of the unused channel can affect the used channel. It's kind of a hallmark of this design. Actually, it's my experience that the tone control exerts more influence on the other channel. But you'll have to experiment to find the different sounds. Great amp. man! Art

Yeah, lot of guitar amps have interactive sections, when not in use. You can see this by pulling the input 12AX7 out of the not-used section. Changes the tone. Even pulling the 12AX7 out of the tremolo/vibrato section can effect a guitar plugged into the NORMAL input.

It's one of the reasons a VC sounds different than Champ. One extra 12AX7....

I use a 12AY7 instead of the 12AX7 that most people are using, and concerning the interactive channels,I usually plug into the instrument input #1,and turn the volume on the Mic channel up fairly high...then I adjust the instrument volume to the level that sounds best with the volume needed...this seems to increase the clean headroom a bit more than just cranking the volume on the instrument channel alone.

Congrats on your amp!

Very happy with Mazda NOS 6V6 in my Princetons, purchased from Mike Kropotkin at www.kcanostubes.com. Mike will hook you up based on your tonal goals and budget. Have been using him for 11 years now.

I buy all my NOS tubes from Mike. He lives about 20 minutes away from me.

Yeah I just ordered a NOS 12ay7 from him. I think I heard you guys mention his site before.

It turns out the amp already has a GT 12ay7 in V1 though. I looked this AM. The guy who traded it with me told me there was a 12ax7 in that position, but I hadn't actually pulled the tubes. The amp overdrives so quickly (which is totally great) I don't know how you could even get anything clean out of it with a AX in v1.

FWIW, the clamp holders on the 6V6's seemed loose so I pulled one of the pairs together trying to tighten them and one of the jaws broke off. Are these easiily replacable?

Bill, did not know you were that close, I just received my order from Mike, picked up some NOS tubes from him to increase my back up stash...love these NOS 12AT7s, 6V6s, and 5U4GBs from there. So do just drop on by and pick em up in person?

Yes, they are easy to replace. They are held in by two small nuts and bolts, probably 4-40's. You do have to reach inside the amp chassis to the back of the tube socket to grab the nut, so make sure you drain the caps before sticking your hands in there.

I did, just once. It was a weekday and I was off so I asked him if I could drop by to pick up my order. He said he normally prefers to ship things out but since I live so close by it was Ok. We chatted for about 30 minutes. We're both dog lovers so we hit it off right away. I wouldn't ask to come by on the weekend out of courtesy so my other orders have been mailed to me. I'm thinking of getting some NOS tubes for my Weber 5F6A (already got the 12AY7 from him). At the very least some NOS 5881s. I do have a birthday coming up.

Yeah s3, http://www.tubesandmore.com, has the retaining claws. Maybe order some Caig Deoxit Shield(S5), to spray those tube pins. Happy Pickin' ! Art

Art, just an FYI. I've been using Dexoit GN5 the last couple of years. It has a higher temp rating than the D5. A little better for output and rectifier tubes & sockets.

So, do Super Reverb's have interactive channels as well? I plug into the "Vibrato" channel of the amp and the unused channel, of course, is the "Normal" channel. Does anyone fully understand how your settings, of the unused channel, affect the channel that you are playing through? For example, if I have everything (Volume, Treble, and Bass) in the unused, or in this case the Normal, channel wide open or all the way up then how does that affect the channel being used? I was pretty thrilled to find the previous post about interactive channels here because I was messing around with my amp settings and did notice that the levels in the unused channel did, in fact, have an impact on the sound of the signal coming through the channel I was playing through. Also, how does pulling the 12ax7 tube from the vibrato channel impact the amplifier? I read earlier that it changes the tone of the amp but I'm curious as to what it does overall to the channel as far as frequency goes. Does it boost the signal of the channel or cut it? Is the frequency of the signal more or less responsive? I guess I may not be asking the right questions as I don't fully understand how this stuff works but that's why I'm here, to learn. Thank you for your time to anyone who posts on this topic. Any new information would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I know, the AA (AB)763 SR have interactive stages. To test the theory, just pull the input 12AX7 (7025) on the usused channel and see if can hear a difference.

With many of this era Fender amps, you can pull the tremolo/vibrato 12AX7 and hear a difference in the NORMAL channel's response.
