Ok was listening to this hendrix track

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1cjaHgFa2w

Then found this sound clip on you tube. I really want this amp tone.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PaiDuiLzas

But a 59 bassman is way out of my reach and the reissues don't come close.
Why make a reissue that sounds so far off? I dont know im probably naive or something.

Eddie Kramer says Jimmy was using a 63 bassman head to get this sound.
I think the diff in the 2 circuits are the 63 has a SS rectifier.

Does anyone know of an amp under a 1000.00 bucks that can get me there?

Thanks!

You know fingers, touch, type of guitar have a lot to do with tone. I'm pretty sure a LOT of ppl can't get Jimi's tone, even with a 1960's Bassman. You may get close with say a Princeton Reverb or Deluxe Reverb playing through a cab with a good 15-inch speaker.

How you dial in the tone (both amp and guitar), what kinda pups you have, and any OD pedals can make a difference, too. But I still think, at least 50% of the final tone is in the hands of the guitarist.

These things are not simple recipes. Don't let anyone tell you "buy this guitar and that amp" and you are going to shred like the Pros.

Don't get discouraged. Just try to avoid paying a lot of $$$ for this amp or that guitar, or this pedal--- only to be dissapointed with the results.

THanks ive been doing this for 25 years.. im not so interested in souding like jimi.. im specifically interested in the circuit that created that tone. I have everything else nailed.

Cheers!

Well, you should know someone that has a vintage Bassman. Try your guitar on it and see what the tone is like, is my best suggestion. The dual 6L6GC or 5881 through that OPT and 4 x10-inch speakers does give the 1960 Bassman a unique tone.

I like my 1962 Pro with the 15-inch JBL speaker. And the three 12AX7 driven tremolo/vibrato circuit. Don't know if it's Jimi, but the amp does have a very unique tone. Unlike any other Fender.

You need to look for the older 59 Bassman RI not the newer LTD,s. I have one from 1990 and it sound darn good when turned up but its loud.

Even vintage amps sound different from one another, that's their nature, the tolerance differences of the components can cause that,so searching for the holy grail of a certain amp can become frustrating....people spend all sorts of money to find a '59 Bassman or that '64 Vibroverb only to find thay still can't nail the tone of their guitar heroes...if I wanted to get close, and that's as real as it gets, then I would play through as many amps as I could to find the one.

Bingo Reb! You took the words right out of my mouth. It is the tolerances drifting that can make the difference both good and bad. Vintage effect pedals do the same thing. You will never "nail" someone else's tone. It all about touch, technique and a bunch of other stuff involved. Plus guy's modded the snot out of their gear back then just like they do today and keep their mouths shut about it.

I think I was mis understood. I was looking for that amp voicing.. not nailing someone elses tone. And I found it in a 62 bassman head yesterday. Cheers and thanks for all the replies

Tongo, good luck with that great amp! You gonna run it through a 4 X 10 or a 1 X 15 inch? Tone is different between the two. The JBL D130 is a very good speaker, IMHO. And the 4 X 10-inch (esp the CTS) is another great set of speakers. But voicing is quite different.

Thanks! Bmw.. I am going to shlep the head and my fav strat around to some of my fav mom and pop guitar shops in manhattan and try out diff cabs.. I do like the 60 bassman 4x10 voicing but I want to remain open to the tonal possibilities this head has to offer.. so im going to try a bunch of diff cabs.

Cheers!

That's the best way to do it. Very few mortar-&-brick stores left in LA. And testing at GC can be a real challenge. You versus 25 "shredders."

Good luck!
