OK Fender amp geeks....
What Fender amp--of any era--has the best sounding tremelo? Tremelux? Vibro Champ? Vibrolux? Vibroverb? Vibro King? Vibrosonic? Twin, Princeton, Deluxe....
I'm a tremelo geek so I gotta know...

In my stash, the brownface Pro (6G5-A) with the three 12AX7 driven vibrato/tremolo section. Followed by the VC (AA or AB764).

I actually prefer the Tremolo on my 1964 Gibson Discoverer Tremolo - with my SF Princeton Reverb a close second. (I also have a vibro champ and a Princeton no-verb)

For me - its more the wattage of the amp and the speaker size that makes that effect work the best. Obviously the speaker size brings a larger spectrum of tones to the mix and probably drives my opinion.

Of my amps,it's the 1960 Brown Fender Super,with 2x10s....lush trem. :D
It's marked 5-G4 on the tube chart, but has both features of the 6-G4 and 6-G4A,with some variation of the Twin's tone controls,it's a transitional amp for sure.

For tweeds, the trem on the 5G9 is king. Intense hypnotic slam.

Brown 'harmonic vibrato' trem is amazing and quite 'musical'.

The trem on the 6G16 vibroverb is really intense (bias-vary trem at the output stage - like the 5G9, but for 6L6s).

But even BFDR trem is insanely nice (roach trem in the pre-amp)

They all work in different ways and have different effects/qualities.

I s'pose I shouldn't talk about Magnatone vibrato or Vox vibrato on this forum...

Actually, I'd love to hear how you compare Vox tremelo to the Fenders you have. 'Cuz I have a Vox AC15 and love the tremelo on that.

Could you guys please translate the codes-- 5G4, 5G9, 6G4, 6G5, 6G16, BFDR, etc? Or point me to a website with a chart that translates them? Thanks!

BFDR = Blackface Deluxe Reverb

The other numbers are circuit numbers that Fender assigned to their various amp designs. In general, the 5 series are from the 50s with the 6 series from the 60s. This might help:

I am rather new to this forum having spent most of my time modding and working on amps from the other side of the pond. :) However, I once had the privilege of playing an early '60's Concert. I do not know if it was the 6G12. or the 6G12A, but it was unreal. The tremolo really was hypnotic. And when I cranked it up to 10 it was just amazing. I couldn't afford to buy it, the shop owner wanted $1000.00, but I have never forgotten it. Perhaps it was the four ten's, but I would love to have that amp nowadays.

"Hypnotic"......that's the best descriptive to apply to Leo's harmonic tremolo. It was the most complex and best sounding of his three tremolo circuits. Tragically, it was abandoned in order to add reverb to the "professional" combo amps.

:(

My 63 Vibroverb Reissue has a fantastic tremelo. Much better than my SFDR.

All blackfaces, with the exception of the Vibro Champ, Princeton, and Princeton Reverb, use the opto-isolator tremelo system. Those other three employ a modulated-bias oscillator to vary the conductance of the output tubes. Your '63 VVRI uses this method. The signal swell and decay profile is more subtle and nuanced than with the O/I circuit.
