Hey everybody! First time posting here. You seem to be a knowledgeable bunch.

I've got a Silverface Super Reverb here about 6 months ago. I have no idea what year it is as I keep getting different date codes from different parts. Chassis stamp dates it to a 1972 but the OT and PT date it to a 1975.

I want to remove the Master Volume from the circuit which I read is very simple to do. However, no one seems to really explain how to do it.

So..how do I remove the Master Volume?

On my Twin, I just left it on 10 and pretended it didn't exist.

I wasn't thinking of doing it or not. I want it removed and I don't live in a city with amp techs and the techs are guitar center are incompetent.

Anyone?

GC usually farm out amp work. I understand your point. Most people just ignore them. I did for over 30 years. Do you think it will sound that much better with it removed? A friend in one of my bands years ago had it done and his Twin still sounded pretty much the same as mine. He thought it was a waste of money.

There are so many things to look at fixing or maintaining on that amp before taking out something that doesn't make a difference.

Leaving the MV on 10 in effect takes it out of the circuitry. You're then controlling your amp volume with the individual channel volumes.

By all means find a good tech (even if it's shipping the chassis) to have electrolytic filter caps changed, etc., but I wouldn't pay someone the bench fee just to remove the master volume.

Filter caps have been replaced and most of the electrolytics. It's a great sounding amp.

Does the MV still stay out of the circuitry with the push-pull as well? I always heard it's not so much the MV but the push-pull part of the circuit that makes a difference when removed.

About to retube it sometime soon, but merely out of preference in tubes. The ones that are in there are Ruby's but I'd like to see what a tube swap would do for tone

Hi InglouriousFenrir,

I colored this copy from the schematic to show how to remove the MV from the circuit and rewire to non-MV, leaving the pot in place for the push pull switches. With the pot pushed in, the switches are out of the circuit, as if they weren't there. You can always reverse the wiring and components if you don't like the sound with the new wiring.

Shim,

Thanks! This is exactly what I needed! Now, how do I read this? LOL

(I relate schematics to sheet music. You can get really fancy with both but some people would just rather read a tab or in this case a layout)

I'll pull the chassis and figure it out though.

EDIT: Just reread your post. I want to remove the pot entirely (for aesthetic reasons, got a non-MV silverfaced faceplate that I want to put on).

To remove the pot completely, just disconnect the switch wires from the pot and tape them off, or remove the wires from their source.

the dreaded pull boost stays out of the circuit as long as you don't pull the volume knob. I have the same feature on my Princeton Reverb and to my ears, it sounds horrible, so I don't use it. No need to take it out unless the amp were in for other issues or the pot went bad.

+1 Same with my Twin. I wouldn't even bother. It won't make a bit of difference in the sound of the amp if you don't use it.
