Hi Guys, I'm new here, I'm also a member on MLP and Marshall Amp Forum. I came here because I'm chasing Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols tone. He used a 70s Master Volume Fender Twin. Apparently he used no pedals to boost his signal and just dimed it. I've heard that Fender Twins can't get that crunchy, so when you dime them they're just really loud and clean. Is that true? Or is it BS? Thanks in advance!

My experience with 6L6GC Fender Twin amps is they are clean, to very loud. Then crunch abruptly and heavy. Problem is, it's so loud you need to be outdoors or in a very big room to really hear it.

Regardless of what he used for the album (it's debatable), the sound is definitely anything but a Twin Reverb by itself and is much more Marshally, which is what he uses now.

Save your ears and the eviction notices and get a smaller Fender and an overdrive pedal, or get something Marshall. Great that you're chasing his tone, but unless you live on a farm or on the moon, cranking a Twin Reverb isn't an option.

I owned a MV Twin with the pull boost for over 30 years. He may have used the pull boost. I never did because it threw the amp into asstone mode. Without the boost function, you'll never get it to break up till it get to seriously deafening levels. It was a great sounding as long as you didn't use the pull boost and left the MV on 10, and seriously reliable amp. I recommend using a pedal.
