Hello all, great forum ya'll got here.

Just some quick info. Been playing guitar around 6 months now, been having a blast. Lost my job and have been thinking very seriously about this whole buy on Craiglist sell on Ebay thing.

One question, I found this amp.

http://elmira.craigslist.org/msg/2834568115.html

Got him down to 300. I mean any info about whether this is a good deal, or how fast I may possibly be able to sell it would be absolutely fabulous! Also, is there specific things I should be looking for when buying these types of amps? (I have been seeing a lot of them around)

Thanks guys!

Also, does anyone have experience with this type of thing selling on ebay?

I understand that (should have clarified.)

But can I sell it regardless?

That's not an amplifier, it's just the speakers (speaker cabinet). It would require an amp head in addition to run it.

Craigslist is a "buyer beware" market. You could wind up buying something that was parted out for it's original parts and replaced with cheap after market parts. And there's little chance of protecting yourself from being ripped off.

As for ebay, it's a world wide market. You have scam artists there too, as well as the entire globe doing what you're asking about.

If you're actually that interested in what the potential profit and loss is here, I'd suggest adding some items to your watch list and observing what they actually sell for.

If you're asking me to do your studying for you, the answer is no.

No, I didn't mean to come off that way. I just thought that you guy's having dealt with these types of amps for many years could almost look at it and tell if it's a fake or not.

I guess after looking all over, the cabinet doesn't look (to me) like its from 1973. I haven't seen one cabinet on ebay that looks like that from 1973. I think just the Utah speakers are from 1973... Whew, i'm pretty confused, definetely going to have to do some serious research (I also do that "watch list" thing.)

I mean I could possibly make 500 from it... maybe more, and then ebay takes their 10% as well as probably having to hold on to it for possibly months.

From the photos (not too detailed), looks like the real thing. Compare with links.

What you're referring to is flipping - trying to buy something at a low price and then reselling it quickly at a higher price.

This may work on some items that people aren't aware of, but with sites that let you search all of Craigslist locations and not just local ones, those days are gone.

That speaker cabinet is also huge; it's on craigslist because no one wants to pay shipping on that size cabinet on eBay. It also probably sounds iffy at best -- this is not the desirable cabinet for the Fender line. People buy cabinets on Craigslist because they can save on shipping by picking up locally.

I don't mean to sound harsh, but some perspective should be helpful. You mention making $500 off this -- there is no way you'll buy this speaker cab for $350 and then sell it for $850 -- not even close. Search eBay under Completed Listings for the same item and you'll see. If you're looking to do this as a way to make a quick buck, I would say it's not going to work. Flipping usually works when you buy an item that's damaged, broken, fix it and then resell it. Trying to arbitrage Craigslist and eBay may work on combo amps or amp heads, but definitely not on speaker cabinets.

Something else for you to consider -

There are no fees with Craigslist. And it is ideal for local transactions. I use CL quite a bit.

Ebay has fees - then you have Paypal fees - a lot of buyers will haggle for shipping and demand the seller pay for shipping..... (add those up and on a major item, it could be hundreds of dollars)

The long and short of it, you can find yourself barely recouping your investment after your ebay transactions.

My advice - unless you really know the market and the product - you might not want to pursue this business model. :D

The days of finding great deals on amps went out with the internet age for the most part..everybody looks at eBay to see what whatever it is they have to sell is going for and they think they'll make alot of money, some do...most don't.
If you don't know about vintage amps,or amps in general, you're at a disadvantage to begin with....like your first post, evidently you thought you were looking at an amp when it was a speaker cab.
Find another money making scheme...not trying to be harsh, but you will have to learn a lot more than you know now.

I appreciate the responses. To be honest though, I've already made a few hundred bucks selling and Art and Lutherie and an LTD ESP.

I think i'll stick with the basic guitars that people pick up, never learn on, and are tired of it taking space up, snatch it up cheap, and make 50-80 bucks per item, it's just nice to have a little extra money, and I personally am having a lot of fun haggling with people and the like.

Again, thanks guys.

I'm sure I'll be back when I see something of the like and I see $ signs in my eyes... hehe, can't help it.

(quick info on the speaker cabinet. Called the guy and offered him 180, he cussed me out (not kidding) and told me I was crazy, and got really mad when I asked him why he was selling it and the like... guy had problems.))

I think you'll find that if you lowball people like that at almost 1/2 their asking price, they are going to be insulted. It may not be everyone's speaker cab, but $180 is insulting.

As for why he's selling, it's his own business - perhaps like yourself he also lost his job. I'm sure as you start selling things you may get people asking you the same.
