BTW,you need to replace the power cord on that amp for safety,I don't know what type of wiring your house has where you live but check with an amp tech in your area and have that done...I replace all of mine and so does everyone else that I know who uses these amps especially in a gigging situation, don't worry about the amp not being less original because of it,it's a lot safer, just save any old parts you replace like capacitors and resistors, etc.
These amps are like owning a classic old car, they need to be maintained to run smoothly and safe.

Thanks for the advice! I have already called to my local professional amp repair guy, who has done that job twice for my other amps. At the same time one transformer needs to be replaced, because of voltage difference here in Europe. I'll keep the old parts safe of course!

I would have to imagine there are better solutions to european power than modding a great vintage amp. I would consider a step-up external transformer if needed, but don't change the transformers - that's a big part of the amp's tone.

Yes change the plug to a proper grounded plug, disconnect the death cap and change the electrolytic filter caps -- all are mandatory with an amp this age and won't impact sound a bit. Changing transformers definitely will.

Yep, I agree with Nedo on the Xformer. The less soldering in that gem ,the better! Art

I think you are right, I should think twice about replacing the transformer, but one of the biggest reasons to do it, is (I've heard) that using an external step up transformer will most likely produce loudish hum when using amp, compared to replacing the transformer. There is a Hammond transformer that is supposed to fit right in, without having to do any kinds of permanent modifications to the chassis (drilling etc.).

It would be great to hear a sound clip if anyone had recorded an amp before and after transformer replacement. I have never had a chance to compare them.

Hammonds are very good trannies. Go for the proper 300-series replacement. They take awhile to break-in (why it's nice to keep a good old tranny).

Good luck with that!

+1 on the Hammond and not altering the chassis....I had to replace an unoriginal PT in my Super and got a Hammond, they're very well made.

Yeah, if you're comfortable with the swap, then go for the Hammond. Didn't know about the hum problems. There are advantages to having the suitable trans in the amp. Less gear to haul around and the assurance that all is well whenever you or anyone else plugs it in. Good Luck ! Art

FWIW I used as step up transformer when I was stationed and gig'd in Germany. I had no issues of any hum from either the amp or the transformer. Just make sure you get one big enough to handle your amp.
